West Nile Virus Alert

Indianapolis, IN
Health officials have confirmed mosquitoes carrying West Nile have been found in Marion County – about two weeks earlier than usual.

“Although we have seen mosquitoes with the virus as early as April, this is unusual, and likely the result of the hot, dry conditions and the warmer than normal weather we have had in Marion County since early spring,” said Jim Erwin, biologist, Mosquito Control.

Mosquitoes carrying West Nile also have been found in several other counties around the state. Current stats are displayed on the state’s website .

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes that have first bitten an infected bird. A person bitten by an infected mosquito may show symptoms three to 15 days after the bite, according to Indiana health officials.

Symptoms include: fever, headache, body aches, swollen lymph glands or a rash.

Here are some ways to increase your safety or the safety of your children.
  • Avoid being outdoors during prime mosquito biting times from dusk to dawn, when possible;
  • Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaradin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to clothes and exposed skin;
  • Install or repair screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of the home; and,
  • When possible, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when outside.
Be safe!
