Crimes against Children 8-17-12

Springfield, MO
David M. Ketchmark, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Carthage, Missouri man was convicted in federal court today of the sexual exploitation of a child.
 
Todd Christopher Smith, 41, of Carthage, was found guilty of using a minor to create child pornography.

Officers with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department responded to Smith’s residence on September 27, 2011, after receiving a report that he had slapped a minor female. In the course of their investigation, officers found evidence of Smith’s sexual abuse of several child victims. Officers discovered six videos on Smith’s cell phone that depicted Smith engaged in sex with the child victim. There were also 12 videos that appear to have been taken covertly in the bathrooms in Smith’s residence that depict the child victim as well as five other minors.

Under federal statutes, Smith is subject to a sentence of 35 years to life in federal prison without parole, based on his prior convictions for sexual misconduct in the first degree in Missouri and criminal sexual abuse in Illinois (both convictions involved minor victims). A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

St. Louis, MO
August Poertner was sentenced to 97 months in prison, followed by lifetime supervised release, for his receipt and possession of child pornography between January 2009 and October 2011.

Poertner, 45, Pacific, Missouri, pled guilty in May to two felony counts of possession of child pornography and one felony count of receipt of child pornography, and he appeared today for sentencing before United States District Judge Jean C. Hamilton.

Gulfport, MS
A 61-year-old Ocean Springs man convicted of possessing thousands of images of child pornography will serve eight years and a month in federal prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release.

The Sun Herald reports (http://bit.ly/N8b45c ) Robert A. Ormsbee was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Gulfport.

U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis says Ormsbee was also ordered to pay a $3,000 fine and $3,000 in restitution.

He is required to register as a sex offender, and has forfeited all computer equipment and other electronic devices.

Greenfield, SC
A former South Carolina trooper was sentenced to three years in prison for possession of child pornography.

Randy L. Quinn Jr., 34, of Seneca, received the sentence Thursday in federal court in Greenville, according to United States Attorney Bill Nettles.

Evidence presented at the change of plea hearing established that in May 2011, agents with the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Investigations were conducting an on-line Internet investigation to identify individuals possessing and sharing child pornography in upstate South Carolina. Agents located a computer on the network sharing approximately 49 files, and of those files, several had file names that indicated they may contain child pornography. Agents initiated a download from the files listed for sharing and discovered that the files were child pornography, according to a release from Nettles.

Anchorage, AK
A 34-year-old Anchorage man has been charged with three counts of distributing child pornography and two counts of possessing it.

Anchorage police say bail for Peter Christopher Davis was set at $25,000 after his arrest Thursday.

The investigation began in February. Police say Alaska State Trooper investigators working undercover received images depicting the sexual exploitation of children from Davis.

Police say one of their own investigators received additional illicit images from Davis in June.

Police say a search warrant at his home led to the discovery of computers and digital media that had held hundreds of images of sexually exploited children.

Police have charged a former Nova Scotia teacher and principal with accessing and possessing child pornography.

Brian Jobb of Lunenburg County was charged after police searched a home last month and seized computer equipment.

The 62-year-old taught along the South Shore for over 20 years before retiring as principal at Lunenburg Academy in 2006.

Loydminster, Saskatchewan
A Lloydminster-area man who was caught sharing a massive child pornography collection has received a five-year prison sentence.

Shane Dale Pattison, 21, was sentenced in Saskatoon Friday after pleading guilty to 53 child porn-related offences.

He had been sharing the images online with more than 400 people, some of whom were actively involved in abusing children, court heard.

Four children were rescued from their abusers as a result of the Pattison investigation.

Madison, AL
Beatty.jpegThe Madison Police Department arrested Justin David Beatty, 22 of Madison Thursday for possession of child pornography.

An investigation started when a resident of New York contacted Madison police and filed a complaint against Beatty for soliciting nude pictures of a juvenile.

After investigating the allegations, police administered a search warrant on Beatty's residence and seized electronic devices including a computer where pornographic images of children were found. 

St. Petersburg, FL
A St. Petersburg man whose computer contained more than 2,700 files with child pornography was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison Thursday.

Daniel E. Lombardi, 30, pleaded guilty in May to transporting child pornography.

An undercover FBI agent launched a publicly available file sharing program Nov. 9, according to court documents. The agent observed that Lombardi was logged in to the network and shared a folder that contained numerous images of child pornography, and the agent downloaded several images.

Lombardi also shared child pornography files in later online contact with officers.

A NORTHERN Tasmanian man who viewed almost 1000 images and videos of child pornography has been jailed for six months.

Keith Hunter, 65, was sentenced in the Supreme Court in Launceston on Thursday after pleading guilty last week to two counts of accessing child pornography material.

Justice Shan Tennent said the material included computer simulations of child pornography, as well as real images and videos.

He accessed child porn between August 2009 and August 2011, and had installed software to hide his tracks, deleting the images once he had seen them and deleting his internet history.

Justice Tennent said Hunter accessed child porn every week, and ran Google searches looking for images of young, naked teenage girls.
