Child Abduction Digest 10-8-12

Cherokee, IA

Just before noon Thursday, the Cherokee Police Department says it responded to an attempted abduction incident near the city's Central Park by Fareway.

Authorities say a 22-year-old adult male reported he was approached by a male suspect driving a silver van. The driver asked the young man where he was going, and told to "get in the car". The victim tells police he refused, and continued walking to work. The suspect turned around and drove away without any further contact.

The following is a release from Cherokee CSD Superintendent John Chalstrom:
In order to provide accurate information and prevent the spread of erroneous rumors, I would like to clarify reports that have been circulating in the school and community regarding a possible child abduction.

There was no attempt to abduct a student of the Cherokee CSD. This morning, local law enforcement received a report from an adult who claimed to have been stopped by a gentleman in his 50's and told to get in his van. The adult did not get in the van, reported to work, and contacted law enforcement nearly an hour later.

Sioux City, IA
Someone has reported a possible abduction to the Sioux City Police Department. Police were called to the area of Military Road and Prescott Street at about 6pm on Thursday.

The person said she saw a 12-year-old girl being pulled into a van. The girl had brown hair and a gray T-shirt with shorts.

The van was described as a white boxy type van with dark windows. There was blue writing on the passenger side.

Greensburg, IN

A Greensburg teenager was arrested Thursday after police said she lied about being abducted earlier in the week.

Eighteen-year-old Tina Anne Dixon was charged with false reporting, a Class A misdemeanor.

On Monday at approximately 10:13 p.m., police say Dixon called 911 to report she was a victim of an abduction on Freeland Road, near the Greensburg Walmart. Dixon also reported she was let out of the vehicle on State Road 3, approximately six miles north of Greensburg.

Police said Dixon reported two males in a black pick-up truck abducted her and inappropriately touched her while she was in the vehicle.

Investigators say Dixon falsified her statement and that the abduction did not occur. Greensburg police said Walmart provided valuable video surveillance used in the investigation. Police say Dixon has not given a reason for why she filed the false report.

Fresno, CA
The California Highway Patrol has lifted an Amber Alert after a Central Valley father who allegedly failed to take his two children to school was found and arrested.

The children, ages 9 and 6, were found safe at about 1:30 p.m. Friday.

The CHP located their father, Phillip Tumilty Sr., near the Central California town of Atwater, about 35 miles from where the children were allegedly abducted earlier in the day after a domestic dispute. The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department reported that Tumilty had argued with his ex-wife. He said he would take the children to school, but allegedly never did.

San Mateo, CA
A San Francisco man charged with abducting a 9-year-old girl from a bathroom at an elementary school in San Mateo last month has been charged with 10 additional felonies in connection with an incident that took place at a Daly City school earlier this year, the district attorney said. Bradley Mrazek, 25, standing in red inmate clothes behind glass, appeared briefly in San Mateo County Superior Court this afternoon when the new charges were announced. Mrazek has been identified as a man who allegedly entered a bathroom at George Washington Elementary School in March and tried to take pictures of girls using the facilities, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. The girls heard clicking noises coming from a stall and reported it to a teacher, Wagstaffe said.

Weathersfield, OH

Weathersfield police said they are looking for information after a man tried to abduct a 10-year-old girl walking home from Mineral Ridge Middle School on Thursday.

Police Chief Joe Consiglio said the girl was walking home at about 2:45 p.m. in the 1300 block of Depot Street when a man pulled up next to the girl and tried to coax her into his white van by offering her a ride home.

Consiglio said the girl ran home safely.

The man was described as white, 30 to 40 years old with a bald head and was unshaven. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the sleeves cut off and had tattoos all over his arms, including one that was either wings or a Harley-Davidson logo.

San Bernadino, CA
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies are on the hunt for a sexual predator they say tried to abduct an 11-year-old girl Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities said the attempted abduction occurred in Highland, near Sterling Avenue and Baseline Streets.

CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Greg Mills said the suspect tried to pull the girl into a van but she was able to pull away.

Mills spoke to concerned parents, including Martiza Beasley, a Highland resident. “It’s scary to know there are people out here going around and doing this to kids.”

Wichita, KSA 13-year-old girl walking to school on Monday morning told police two men in an SUV attempted to abduct her at knifepoint, according to police.

At 7:20 a.m., dispatchers received a call about the attempted abduction near Funston and Mosley in south Wichita.

The girl told police that she was able to get away after one of the men grabbed her by the arm and one held a knife on her. She was able to wriggle free and went home, police said.

Police are looking for the two men, who fled in a white SUV with a large body and tinted windows. They were last seen heading south on Mosley.
