Shooting at Sikh Temple in Wisconsin Leaves at Least 7 Dead, Including Gunman

In the wake of the Aurora Theater shooting in Colorado, a gunman has killed six and wounded three others before being shot and killed by a police officer at a Sikh Temple.
This brings up a point that needs to be addressed. Movie theaters and churches are "soft targets", as are schools.
A soft target is one that is not armored, or heavily protected. In a free society such as ours, this is to be the norm, not the exception. To protect us from attack while in these places, we would need to turn them into fortresses; harden their walls, install security systems, and hire armed guards around the clock. The U.S. is not ready to make this happen.
Information will come out about why this happened, and how it happened. The early information is, as it usually is, sketchy and often incorrect. In the meantime, all we can do is pray for the ones who were lost, and pray for the swift recovery of those who were injured.
Another thing we can do is to honor the police officer who was tending to a wounded victim when he was shot is to become the Sheepdog, like he was. Look out for each other, and don't allow yourselves to cower in your homes, like sheep.
Freedom requires vigilance, and we are indeed a free nation. Therefore we must be vigilant.
Be Sheepdogs.

Death Walked in the Door in Wisconsin
Madison, WI
A news story out of Wisconsin tells a sad tale of a father who has allegedly killed his three daughters. He and his wife were divorced in January, and she had custody of the children in Madison, while he lived in North Dakota.
11-year-old Amara Schaffhausen, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia
The court testimony provides some grisly details, but little illumination on why this heinous incident occurred.
The three girls attended Greenwood Elementary School, which is in summer break. Even so, the school has opened its doors, and has provided personnel to assist people with processing their grief and shock. It is always difficult for a school when they lose one of their own. Losing three is a tragedy that will take some time from which to recover, especially with the incident's horrific nature.
As a society, this incident raises numerous questions that are not the purview of this blog. Of greater concern here is how a school would begin to recover from something like this. From the details I have gleaned, it appears that this school is off on the right track. Serving as a source of comfort and aid solidifies the school's role in the community, and is serving as a focal point for recovery. It appears that this school has thought ahead, and was prepared.

Suspect Arrested for Child Abduction Tried Taking Home Other Kids Before
Milwaukee, WI
We're learning more about the woman accused of abducting a child from a Milwaukee school.
The questions are swirling around Starms Early Childhood Center. TODAY'S TMJ4 has identified the name of the suspect and TODAY'S TMJ4 is beginning to learn more about how she made her move.
As four-year-old Charity recovers from an abduction, her mom, Paula, is amazed at how this could have happened.
Witnesses saw 33-year-old Lisa Isaac walk into school and take her baby girl, while mom waited in an office just feet away. "I waited for her a while and she never came, and the teacher came down and said that she had left with a lady with a curly wig, and said I told her to pick her up," said Paula.
Milwaukee Public Schools Communications Director Roseanne St. Aubin told TODAY'S TMJ4 extra security staff has been added to the center. She maintains Isaac snuck into school with daycare van drivers and snatched the girl.
"That little girl was passing close to that group of people, and the woman took her," said Roseann St. Aubin.
Staffers at the Evans Academy of Excellence, a nearby daycare, told TODAY'S TMJ4 the woman came in twice, trying to take a child home.

Anti-Child Pornography Digest 5-4-12

United States Attorney James L. Santelle announced that a criminal complaint had been issued charging Philip H. Wentzel (age 41) of West Allis, Wisconsin, with production of child pornography. If convicted, Wentzel would face a minimum of 15 years and a maximum of 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
According to the criminal complaint, Wentzel is a Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Deputy. The criminal complaint alleges that in approximately April 2011, Wentzel knowingly produced child pornography. According to the complaint, Wentzel was involved in a peer-to-peer file-sharing program known to be utilized by individuals who trade child pornography. The complaint alleges Wentzel’s profile page stated he was looking for original images of child pornography involving girls. It is further alleged that Wentzel made videos of child pornography involving prepubescent girls who appear to be sleeping and or drugged when the child pornography images were taken.

Craig High Deals with False Threats of Violence
Janesville, WI
Some Craig High School parents kept their kids home Monday after a threat of violence was discovered at the school Friday night.
The school was and continues to be safe, Superintendent Karen Schulte said.
The district reported that 8.7 percent of students were absent Monday, far higher than the normal 4 percent or 5 percent.
School officials searched all student purses and backpacks before they were allowed to enter school Monday.
"You always have to make that judgment call of whether or not you think it's safe," Schulte said Monday. "The way I assess it is, if my own kids were in this situation, am I confident they would be safe? And if I believe that, then we continue on with the school day. If not, we would not have had school at Craig High School today."
