Girl Attacked at School with Box Cutter Speaks Out

A Hutchings Career Center student is speaking out about violence in schools after being attacked with a box cutter.

Anesha Henderson, 16, was attacked by a classmate while on her way to class in September.

"Her and her friend said something, so I said 'okay whatever'. So the girl came behind me and hit me in the back of the head," Henderson said, "So when I turned around I hit her back. We started fighting and I didn't even feel when she cut me."

Both girls were suspended and Henderson's attacker was arrested. According to Bibb County schools, Henderson's attacker snuck the box cutter in by wrapping it up inside of money. Henderson said despite metal detectors and campus security, weapons still make it on campus.

"When people fight," Henderson said, "people bring guns and knives to school."

Since the incident, the school district has hired a new campus police chief. Russell Bentley took over in October. He's conducted several random searches on campuses to crack down on illegal activity in schools.

Rampant Violence Cancels Classes At OKC Elementary School

Oklahoma City Public School canceled classes to address the ongoing violence and widespread school suspensions at North Highland Elementary.

The meetings between school leaders and teachers come after parents and community members complained North Highland Elementary Schools students are fighting. There have been a reported 34 school suspensions in the first three months of school.

"The language that they use is something that you wouldn't believe comes out of a child that young's mouth," said Lisa Hearst, who lives near the school.

Teachers and Oklahoma City School administrators had a meeting Friday. Meanwhile, stakeholders in the community are having similar conversations.

Brawl at West Side High School Football Game

Violence broke out at a high school football game between Gamble Montessori and Oyler Saturday night.

The two schools are part the Cincinnati Public School system and were playing their game at the Western Hills High School stadium off Glenway Avenue. A witness said that fighting started after Gamble scored a touchdown. Both teams were reportedly exchanging blows and stripping off equipment. Fans apparently came out of the stands and players went into the stands during the fight.

Many Students Scared to Go to School

By most regards, John F. Kennedy High School is a good high school in Silver Spring. The overwhelming majority of students pass state exams with flying colors, and 82 percent graduate within four years. Later this month, students will dress in university gear to celebrate College Readiness Day.

So why do only half of Kennedy students feel safe in school?

On just-released surveys, students in even the Washington suburbs' best schools say bullying remains a serious problem at a level undetected by parents and teachers. Some campuses suspended students hundreds of times for endangering school safety in the 2011-12 school year.

At Kennedy, only 53 percent of students agreed with the statement "I feel safe at school," while students were suspended 131 times for fighting, making threats, stealing, disrupting class, attacking others, or possessing dangerous substances or weapons. At least one-quarter of students at 22 of Montgomery County's 64 public middle and high schools couldn't say they felt safe at school, up from 19 in the previous year.

Two Different High School Football Games Ended In Fans Fleeing The Stands Because Of Violence

In Chicago, either a stabbing or a shooting (details are still sketchy) at Simeon vs. Morgan Park High School; in Naples, Florida, players from Immokalee went into the stands to deal with some persistent hecklers after a loss to Naples High.

Emotions spilled over for Immokalee as the final horn sounded. As teams prepared to line up to shake hands, several Indians coaches and players jumped the fence behind their sideline and rushed into the visitors stands in response to being heckled by their own fans.

A different type of fracas broke out in Chicago at roughly the same time:

From the press box, everything seemed normal, with both sides totally into the game, before the melee began.  Suddenly a wave of fans on the Morgan Park sidelines started running out of the stands, apparently trying to get out of the stands as fast as possible.
The commotion quickly caught the attention of the game's officials, who stopped play as players from both teams sprinted for the sidelines.
Someone in the press box ordered the lights to be put out during the melee, and a person could be heard yelling: "Get down, get down - shots, get down, shots."
Police could not immediately confirm if shots actually were fired.

One person with a stab wound was taken to a local hospital. They're replaying the game tomorrow. Simeon is the same high school future 30-For-30 subject Ben Wilson attended when he was shot and killed in 1984. The lesson, as always, is that if you're going to go to a high school football game, keep your head down and for God's sake, don't go around yelling at people.
