Middle School Students get Big Lesson on Bus Safety

Mt. Gilead, OH
Escaping from the rear emergency door on the smoke filled school bus was a scary thing for Mount Gilead Middle School student Lane Smith. “I couldn’t see a thing. I was scared.”

It was Bus Safety Week and one of the events organized by the staff was the filling of a bus with (harmless) smoke by the Mount Gilead Fire Department. Forty Middle School students who had brought letters of permission from their parents, were seated in the bus. The rest of the Middle School student body watched as smoke filled the bus. When it was filled, the emergency rear door was opened the students escaped in an orderly and rapid fashion.

Stephanie Clark, a bus driver, said 25 million kids ride buses daily in the U.S. and they travel one million miles in a day. She also said that six buses catch fire each day in the U. S.

Bus fires can be caused by at least four things; (1) power steering and transmission fluids have a flash point similar to gasoline so while engine oil and diesel fuel are less prone to ignite, these fluids dripping on the exhaust system or near the electrical spare can ignite quickly. (2) failure to refill the oil in the hub after a brake job; (3) Dual wheels can create friction and enough heat to start a fire and (4) electrical increasing due to complicated circuit breaker on today’s buses.

11 Taken to Hospital after Oregon School Bus Crashes

Oregon, OH
Oregon police have responded to two separate school bus accidents that happened near each other and around the same time Thursday morning.

The first accident was near Seaman and Wynn. There were 28 students on bus #43 en route to Clay High School when a car coming from the opposite direction went left of center. The bus driver knew there were only two options to react: allow the car to hit the bus head-on, or swerve to the right of the road, possibly hitting a utility pole and rolling over. The bus driver decided to stay as far to the right as possible. The car still hit the bus head-on.

Following the crash, 10 students were taken to the hospital for minor injuries or to be checked out as a precaution. The driver of the car was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Eighteen additional students, along with the bus driver, were not injured. Another bus came to pick up those students and transport them to school.

According to a news release from the CPD, the two students engaged in a threatening conversation on Facebook Thursday night. It started when one of the students posted a picture of a firearm and claimed it was real.

The two then discussed the weapon — which turned out to be a toy gun — and began to talk about “killing students, detonating a bomb and planting an explosive device at a school event,” the release said.

Mier says they also directed threats at certain members of the high school marching band. Once the duo realized their threats could be taken seriously, they indicated that they had no intention of carrying them out.

Gahanna School Scare: Police Reveal More about Teen Suspect

Gahanna, OH
A teenager whose cryptic online messages led to his arrest this week said he had thought about killing himself but wanted to “die like a hero,” according to a Gahanna police report released yesterday.

He also told police he had not considered shooting his classmates at Gahanna Lincoln High School. But when police asked how he would perform a shooting, he described in vivid detail how he would trap students and lead officials astray, according to the report.

Police arrested Spencer Pearson, 16, on Monday after tracking several tweets and two YouTube videos to a computer at his home at 1117 Northwood Circle in Gahanna. He was released yesterday from juvenile detention and is charged with a delinquency count of inducing panic.  Authorities say his videos and messages over the weekend spurred 200 calls to police from concerned parents and students.

Rape Charges against High School Players Divide Football Town of Steubenville, Ohio

Steubenville, OH
Police had arrested two sophomore starters just days before and charged them with kidnapping and raping a 16-year-old girl from a town just across the river in West Virginia. One of them is also accused of taking a nude photo or video of the girl.

Several players still on the practice field are also believed to be linked to the incident. Steubenville police are trying to determine whether they were there at the time of the attack or sent digital images of it all over cyberspace.

Officials continue to investigate details of the reports — that the girl was drugged into unconsciousness, ferried from party to party, raped and urinated on before ending up at home where her parents, discovering she was disoriented, took her to a local hospital.
