A Southern California school district is allowing some Sikh students to carry an article of their faith—a dagger-like blade called a kirpan.
At least three high school students in the Jurupa Unified School District will be allowed to wear the approximately 2-inch knives at school after their parents agreed to solder them or sew them into the sheaths so they cannot be used as weapons, Superintendent Elliott Duchon said.
The kirpan is one of five sacred articles that baptized Sikhs must wear.
"This is an issue of religious freedom and of faith," said Mary Burns, the district's longest-serving school board member. "Who am I to deny what is an article of faith of a 600-year-old religion?"
However, board member Brian Schafer argued that edged kirpans should be banned and only kirpan-shaped pendants should be permitted in school. Schafer said he planned to ask for a public school board vote on the issue.
"If I were a parent and I knew someone was wearing one of these daggers, I would worry about my child's safety and the Sikh students' safety," Schafer said.

Evidence of Dating Violence Found among Middle School Students

Nearly one in 11 high school students have reported experiencing some form of dating violence, according to a national study, and some local officials say they're seeing alarming numbers and evidence of abusive relationships among even younger students.
"The youngest I've known of were 11 and 12," said Sheri Dorn, an English teacher at Upland High School who incorporates teaching about dating violence and gender roles in her curriculum.
One in six seventh-grade students reported being a victim of physical abuse at the hands of a boyfriend or girlfriend, according to a national study conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for Blue Shield of California.
"This is something that really isn't spoken about or taught in the schools and it's so important to educate our young people about it," she said.
For nearly a decade, Dorn has been speaking out and trying to bring the topic of teen dating violence to the attention of students, parents and other educators and school systems. She has lectured on the topic at educational conferences.
"People think this is only an adult problem that only takes place between a husband and wife or a boyfriend and girlfriend who live together, but that's not the case," she said.
Many believe the actual numbers may be higher because teens often do not report incidents of abuse or are not aware they are experiencing abuse.

3 Teens Wounded during Shooting near School
Grand Rapids, MI
Two high school students are among three teenagers shot near a public charter school in Grand Rapids.
WOOD-TV reports that a 17-year-old female student at Hope Academy of West Michigan was shot in the leg.
WZZM-TV reports that the other student also was wounded in the leg and that both went back to the school after being shot.
A 16-year-old male was shot in his side. He is not a student at the kindergarten through 12th grade school.
Police say the shootings were off school property and reported about 3 p.m., shortly after classes ended for the day.

School Bus Filled with Students Involved in Accident
Carmel, IN
Police Dispatchers confirm a school bus filled with high school students was involved in an accident early Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred on 136th Street just west of Meridian Street just before 7:30 a.m. An official from Carmel Clay Schools says no students were injured in this incident and the accident was very minor.
Students are sending texts to their parents letting them know they are OK.
Another school bus is coming to the scene to transport the students to school.
