78 Texas School Districts Without Safety Plan

TEXAS
An audit of public schools in Texas, ordered by Governor Perry, found 78 school districts to be missing safety plans, or to have incomplete plans.

The majority of these districts were small, rural districts.

The Attorney General, Greg Abbott, said, "It doesn’t matter if a school district is very small,” he said. “The danger their students face is very large.”

Governor Perry ordered the audit after the Sandy Hook Elementary School attack.

2 Local Schools Placed on State Noncompliance List

Springfield, OH
Two local schools were included on a list of 88 in Ohio that failed to comply with state safety requirements designed to help authorities respond to threats and emergencies in school buildings.
The schools said they should not have been on the list.

A 2006 law requires that schools submit emergency protocols and building blueprints to the Attorney General’s Office and their local law enforcement agencies. The schools’ information is also entered into the Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway system to make it easier for law enforcement to access that information quickly.

Although safety materials are supposed to be resubmitted every three years or sooner, the list issued by the Attorney General’s Office named schools that have not sent in safety plans or building layouts since the law was enacted six years ago. The law does not include a penalty for schools that fail to comply.

Tecumseh Middle School at 10000 W. National Road, New Carlisle, and Urbana Community School at 711 Wood Street were the only schools from Clark and Champaign counties included on the list.

Tecumseh Schools Superintendent Jim Gay said the safety plan for Tecumseh Middle School was sent in with the plans for the other schools in the district in 2008. The Attorney General’s office later confirmed that and has since removed the school from the list.
