Officials ‘Lock Down’ Bennington Middle School

Bennington, VT
About 600 students were “locked down” at the Mount Anthony Union Middle School in Bennington for several hours on Friday, but police said the cause was a single .22-caliber bullet found in the hallway and there were no actual threats of violence or danger to students or staff.

Many parents expressed strong anxiety while waiting outside the school on Friday for students to be released or for more information about why police were there. But tensions decreased dramatically as students began to leave the building.

Police and school officials spent about 30 minutes helping to connect parents and students and assisting students who needed to pick up a particular item from a locker or contact someone for a ride.

After most students had been released, Timothy Payne, principal of the middle school, said the staff had reported finding a single, live cartridge of a .22-caliber bullet around noon on Friday.
