Diane Tran, an honor student at Willis High School was jailed after failing to heed a warning from a judge to attend school. She has been working two jobs to support her brother and sister after her parents separated, and was brought to the judge's attention for truancy.
Truancy is a major issue for schools. Truancy leads to numerous disciplinary and security issues, and so it became natural for schools to turn to the courts to help address the issue.
In Vietnamese culture, work ethic and family are very important. Diane's parents were not in the picture, and she was supporting her family.
An example needs to be made, in regards to truancy and those who are truant. I am not sure this was the example that needed to be made.
