Child Abduction Digest 9-9-12

Winters, CA
Yolo County Sheriff’s deputies, investigating the attempted abduction of a 10 year-old boy in Winters, are asking for help from the public.

The boy was walking home from a fast food restaurant along Russell Boulevard near Brinley Drive around 6 p.m. Sunday, when a man in a gold-colored car stopped and told him to get in the vehicle, according to Sgt. Lance Faille.

Instead, the boy ran to a nearby home and the Sheriff’s Office was notified.

The boy, who said he’s never seen the man or his vehicle, was not hurt, Faille stated in a press release.

Newburgh, NY
Police this afternoon called off their investigation of a possible child abduction after determining that the kids who reported the incident had fabricated the entire story as a prank.

"We investigated every possible lead in determining whether the abduction had occurred with the interest of any possible victim in mind," the NPD said in a statement. "There is no indication that the abduction or any incident that could be perceived as an abduction had occurred."

Aurora, IL
Police have taken a 50-year-old man into custody and have cancelled a community alert that was issued after a report of an attempted child abduction Thursday morning on Aurora’s West Side.

It was not clear Thursday afternoon whether charges would be filed, as police were trying to determine exactly what happened, police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said.

The West Aurora School District said that a Jefferson Middle School student was approached by a possible abductor as she walked to class at about 8:30 a.m.

The school district reported that the girl was approached by a man who grabbed her arm in the 1300 block of Monomoy Street.

A student at Mountain View Middle School fought off a man who apparently tried to kidnap her while walking home from school last Friday.

The man tried to grab the student by the arm, but she kicked him and managed to get away.

The suspect is described as a white male between the ages of 18-25, who weighs about 185 pounds.

The Beaumont Police Department is investigating the incident, and administrators and security personnel within the Beaumont Unified School District have been notified. School district officials say they will "continue to be vigilant in regard to all persons exhibiting suspicious behavior."

Port Jervis, NY
A Port Jervis Middle School student was approached Thursday on her way home from school by a man who may have tried to lure her into his van, school district officials said Friday.

The man, who was white, was driving a red minivan with New Jersey license plates. Officials said he stopped the girl at about 2:15 p.m. on Pennsylvania Avenue and reportedly asked her several times if she wanted a ride.

Chicago, IL
Two separate incidents of what first appeared to be incidents of attempted child abduction have caught the attention of police in Chicago and Aurora.

As WBBM Newsradio’s Dave Berner reports, Guardian Angels are patrolling and escorting students at Columbia Explorers Academy, at 45th Street and Kedzie Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood.
