University of New Hampshire professor David Finkelhor has been studying national school violence for the past 25 years.
He said the news that the Sandy Hook Elementary attack in Newtown, Conn., is deeply disturbing, but it is not an indication that schools are unsafe.
He went on to say, "It's a very rare and unusual and extreme event.
It is not a sign that kids are at risk or that society is becoming more
dangerous for kids," In fact, Dr. Finkelhor went on to say that on a whole, trends in school violence have been coming down.

Child Abduction Digest 7-29-12
Bristol, NH
A registered sex offender is facing charges he tried to abduct two young girls outside a New Hampshire elementary school.
A registered sex offender is facing charges he tried to abduct two young girls outside a New Hampshire elementary school.
Christopher
Geary of Gilford is charged with two felony counts of attempted
abduction of a child under 18, and two misdemeanor counts of stalking.
Bristol Police Chief Michael Lewis told The Citizen ( http://bit.ly/QVr9kD)
that the 43-year-old Geary approached the girls, ages 8 and 9, while
driving his sport utility vehicle about 6 p.m. Thursday outside Bristol
Elementary School.
Lewis
said when Geary exited his vehicle, the girls began to scream and run.
Based upon the girls' description, police arrested Geary.
According
to the state's sex offender registry, Geary was previously convicted of
indecent exposure and lewdness as well as attempted sexual assault with
a victim under 13.

The first incident was reported on March 26 by two sixth-graders, who said a stranger in a black car had asked them to get into his vehicle. They said "no" and walked away, according to Mt. Diablo Unified officials. Click here for that story.
The second was reported Monday, April 17, by a seventh-grade girl, who said a bald, heavy-set man in his thirties had asked her repeatedly to get into his beige van. She also walked away and notified school administrators, according to a message sent to parents by Mt. Diablo officials.

Police in Cadillac are asking for help from the public in learning more information about an attempted abduction earlier this week.
Police say a 10-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy told police they were walking when they were approached by two adults in a van.
