How They Did It: Crips Lured High School Girls Into Prostitution

Fairfax, VA
The story of how a violent street gang lured vulnerable Fairfax-area girls into prostitution is a chilling one for any parent, and is another reason why parents need to keep a close eye on their kids’ involvement with social networking websites. During a three-year period ending in March 2012, members of a violent Virginia street gang used some of these websites to recruit vulnerable high-school age girls to work in their prostitution business.

photoThe story has been reported locally in bits and pieces as it progressed, and now a recap is being distributed nationwide by the FBI, using the Fairfax episode as a cautionary tale for parents and law enforcement authorities.

After a multi-agency state and federal investigation, all five defendants pleaded guilty to various federal charges related to the sex trafficking conspiracy. The leader of the gang—27-year-old Justin Strom—was sentenced on September 14 to 40 years in prison, while the sentences handed down for the other four defendants totaled 53 years.

Strom headed up the Underground Gangster Crips (UGC), a Cripsset” based in Fairfax, Virginia. The Crips originated in Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and since then, the gang has splintered into various groups around the country. Law enforcement has seen a number of Crips sets in the U.S. engaging in sex trafficking as a means of making money.

Gaines, age 55, of Albany, New York, pled guilty today in United States District Court in Albany before District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino to one count of distributing child pornography.

Pursuant to a written plea agreement, Gaines admitted that on December 19, 2011, while using a file sharing program, he distributed, via the Internet, multiple still images containing child pornography. Gaines also admitted that following the March 2, 2012 execution of a federal search warrant at his Albany residence, investigators recovered additional electronic still images and videos of child pornography.

Camden, NJ
A Passaic County, New Jersey man was sentenced today to 51 months in prison for downloading images of young children engaged in sexual activity and posed in a sexually explicit manner, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

Gilbert Seidel, 48, of Hawthorne, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Joseph E. Irenas to an information charging him with one count of possession of child pornography. Judge Irenas imposed sentence today in Camden federal court.

Seidel admitted to possessing videos of child pornography that he had downloaded from the Internet, acknowledging he had videos he knew depicted prepubescent minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct. The files were downloaded using a peer-to-peer file sharing program. A search of Seidel’s residence by law enforcement uncovered hundreds of child pornography files, including videos of a young girl and a toddler being sexually assaulted. As part of his guilty plea, Seidel agreed to forfeit the computers and computer accessories he used to commit the offense.

Crips Gang Recruits High School Girls for Prostitution

From Fox News, the Underground Gangster Crips recruited 16-18 year old girls for a prostitution ring.  Some did so willingly, some were brutalized into it.

Makes one wonder how this could happen without someone noticing.  I am glad the FBI noticed.

Good job, G-men!

Er, I mean Sheepdogs!
