School bus driver training raises interesting questions

Approximately 20 school bus drivers in the Los Banos Unified School District were trained by law enforcement on how to respond to a gunman attacking their bus.  The training was done by the Mercer County Sheriff's Department.  The training was reportedly designed to give the bus drivers "hands-on, practical skills for dealing with a gunman on a bus."

"We go over mentality of active shooters. We give statistics of past incidents, the do's and the don'ts. We give strategies for survival and basically we go over scenarios," said a department spokesman.

The Transportation Director said, "We're not in a classroom, we're in a bus, I think it all applies. The same thing that could happen in the classroom could happen on a bus."

The spokesperson added, "Eventually, our goal is for all districts to have a template and the know-how to preserve life in dealing with active shooters."

Yesterday I blogged about the furor over a driver who witnessed a beating on his bus. Yesterday's blog, and today's story exemplify the problem facing education today.  Educators. 

I have been an educator for 25 years, and I have the utmost respect for for my fellow educators for the dedication, professionalism, and caring they show everyday.  However, as a former Infantry Drill Sergeant and Infantry platoon leader, they are not the most tactically proficient people.  The same mindset that allows them to develop rapport with their students and care deeply enough to spend long hours teaching and grading papers is at odds with the mindset needed to face interpersonal violence and function.

In Staying Alive, a book I co-authored with Mike Dorn and Sonayia Shepherd, we talk about how to develop that mindset.  We talk about the importance of training, including scenario training.  However, it has to be realistic.  Active Shooter incidents are very rare.  Active Shooter incidents on school buses are even more rare.  The various techniques for remaining calm under stress are critical, as is the setting in which these techniques are taught. 

In this type of setting the people who are being taught, with no tactical background, will remember the skills learned in the context of an Active Shooter.  Thus a similar but markedly different scenario, such as a student holding a gun to his own head, will most likely spark a tactical response not suited to the scenario.  Such a reaction may spark a more violent reaction than intended, or wanted.

Active Shooter training sounds 'sexy', but is a very small subset of school violence.  As a precursor to further training, training like this can be great.  As a way to train people to react in all crises, it's not so good.

Potential School Threat of Violence under Investigation in KOTA Territory

A threat of potential school violence was received over the weekend. Since then, the police have been investigating all leads, although they have not released specifics about what the threat is.

Police presence is high in Rapid City schools this week. The police said that school safety is a top priority for law enforcement and school officials.

Police said a Bardstown man illegally downloaded child pornography for years.

James Leslie, 49, was arrested at his home and his daughter, Sara Voepel, 26, was also taken into custody on other charges.

For months, police said they tracked Leslie's every move online and that's how they found out he was allegedly downloading images of children having sex.

Melrose, MA
A Melrose man faces two counts of possession of child pornography after State Police searched his home and seized his computer Friday, according to law enforcement authorities.

Thomas Lynch, 50, was released on personal recognizance after being arraigned in Malden District Court Friday, according to a statement from District Attorney Gerry Leone.

Lynch was arrested following an investigation by a State Police special task force that allegedly traced downloaded child pornography files to his computer. Melrose and State Police executed a search of Lynch's home Friday, where they arrested him and seized his computer, according to prosecutors.

Osage, IA
A former Osage man has been indicted on federal charges of receiving and distributing child pornography.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/Z4rVOV) that 49-year-old Kevin Perrin is charged in an indictment unsealed Thursday in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids.

The indictment alleges Perrin received and distributed child pornography between 2008 and 2009.

Mobile, AL
The Saraland Police Department Criminal Investigation Division arrested Ben Victor Barton Jr. Thursday on charges involving child pornography.

Barton Jr., a 39-year-old from Mobile, Ala., was arrested on charges of two counts of dissemination of child pornography and two counts of possession with the intent to disseminate child pornography, said a press-release from police. 

School Officials, Law Enforcement Respond to "Potential Threat" at Hopkins Co Central HS

Extra officers and even gun sniffing dogs were at a Hopkins Central High School, after concern of a possible threat of violence.

Sheriff's Deputies say they were contacted by the school system Wednesday night. Thursday, three different agencies placed officers at schools across the district.

Law enforcement still aren't sure where this whole thing originated, but several parents took it into their own hands and kept their children home Thursday.

Last night, the Board of Education says Hopkins County Central received a call saying that a student overheard a conversation that included the word "shoot-out". Law enforcement were quickly notified and began their investigation.

Autumn Pasquale Disappearance, Death May Be Linked To String Of Attempted Kidnappings In NJ

The search for missing New Jersey 12-year-old Autumn Pasquale ended last night with the discovery of the girl’s body in a recycling container, and police are currently investigating the girl’s disappearance and murder.

While no arrests have been made in Autumn Pasquale’s kidnapping, police have admitted the case may be linked to a series of attempted abductions in Bergen County in recent weeks.

Fox News spoke to local law enforcement officials about Autumn Pasquale’s case, and cops say that they are investigating a link to attempted abductions in Westwood, Oradell, Hawthorne, New Milford, Maywood, Hackensack, Fair Lawn and Ridgewood, all in Bergen County.

Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino said that while police are examining all leads, the possibility of a connection between the kidnapping attempts and Pasquale’s death is being examined:

“We are absolutely investigating whether there is a link … There certainly is a possibility and only time will tell. We’re looking into every possible angle that we can.”

Juvenile Arrested after Online Post Threatening Violence at Edina High School

About two hours after an online post threatened violence at Edina High School Friday, police said they identified and arrested the juvenile responsible.

District officials said Edina police notified them about the threat shortly after midnight. Classes started as normal Friday.

Here is part of the statement from the high school:
"At this time, the threat is unfounded and the situation is under control. Classes at all schools will proceed as normal today. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority and we take threats against our schools seriously. We are fortunate to have a strong relationship with our local law enforcement and appreciate the work they have done to identify the individual responsible for this threat in such an expedient and professional manner."

Kirtland Central High School Continues to Respond to Tension

Detectives interviewed dozens of Kirtland Central High School students and the school district said it is taking steps to stay ahead of student squabbles after a high-strung week.

Altercations between students and threats of violence prompted law enforcement to have an increased presence at the high school this week.

A fight near the school on Tuesday left one student needing medical attention. School administrators sent a letter home with students on Wednesday telling parents a student had died unexpectedly in Shiprock last weekend and the note asked parents to monitor social networking sites for threats or bullying because of recent incidents at the school.

How They Did It: Crips Lured High School Girls Into Prostitution

The story of how a violent street gang lured vulnerable Fairfax-area girls into prostitution is a chilling one for any parent, and is another reason why parents need to keep a close eye on their kids’ involvement with social networking websites. During a three-year period ending in March 2012, members of a violent Virginia street gang used some of these websites to recruit vulnerable high-school age girls to work in their prostitution business.

The story has been reported locally in bits and pieces as it progressed, and now a recap is being distributed nationwide by the FBI, using the Fairfax episode as a cautionary tale for parents and law enforcement authorities.

After a multi-agency state and federal investigation, all five defendants pleaded guilty to various federal charges related to the sex trafficking conspiracy. The leader of the gang—27-year-old Justin Strom—was sentenced on September 14 to 40 years in prison, while the sentences handed down for the other four defendants totaled 53 years.

Strom headed up the Underground Gangster Crips (UGC), a Crips “set” based in Fairfax, Virginia. The Crips originated in Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and since then, the gang has splintered into various groups around the country. Law enforcement has seen a number of Crips sets in the U.S. engaging in sex trafficking as a means of making money.
