Two Elementary Boys Will Stand Trial For Murder Conspiracy

Ft. Colville, WA
Two students, ten and an eleven year old, at Fort Colville Elementary were arrested after they brought a .45cal handgun with a full clip onto a school bus.  Their intent was to use the handgun to keep anyone from interfering with their plan to rape and stab to death a female classmate.

They had written out a step-by-step plan.  She was selected as the target because "she's rude and always made fun of me and my friends."

The eleven-year old told the police, "I was going to kill her with the knife and [10-year-old] was supposed to use the gun to keep anyone from trying to stop me or mess up our plan."

The prosecutor determined that the rape was not intended as a display of sexual desire, but as a means of displaying power.

A judge ruled that both boys were emotionally mature to understand what they were doing, and the case is proceeding to trial.

La Puente High School Student Injured in Stabbing

La Puente, CA
A La Puente high school student was stabbed three times after an altercation with another student Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident, which left one student stabbed in the face, neck and chest, took place just before 3 p.m. at Bassett High School, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The injured student was taken to County+USC Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. He was in stable condition.

Authorities were still looking for the suspect.

The two male students who were involved were age 16 and 17, and both were believed to be in 11th grade.

Bassett Unified School District Superintendent Martin Galindo said that the two students had been involved in a "verbal altercation" on Tuesday but did not alter school officials. He said he was unaware of any gang connection the students might have had.

"After dismissal today, as students were leaving, the two male students started fighting, and one student pulled knife and stabbed the other student on the cheek," Galindo said. "The perpetrator started running."

The stabbing happened with school security and administrators nearby, he said.

Death Walked in the Door in Wisconsin

Madison, WI
A news story out of Wisconsin tells a sad tale of a father who has allegedly killed his three daughters.  He and his wife were divorced in January, and she had custody of the children in Madison, while he lived in North Dakota.

Girls_Killed.jpg 11-year-old Amara Schaffhausen, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia

The court testimony provides some grisly details, but little illumination on why this heinous incident occurred.

The three girls attended Greenwood Elementary School, which is in summer break.  Even so, the school has opened its doors, and has provided personnel to assist people with processing their grief and shock.  It is always difficult for a school when they lose one of their own.  Losing three is a tragedy that will take some time from which to recover, especially with the incident's horrific nature.

As a society, this incident raises numerous questions that are not the purview of this blog.  Of greater concern here is how a school would begin to recover from something like this.  From the details I have gleaned, it appears that this school is off on the right track.  Serving as a source of comfort and aid solidifies the school's role in the community, and is serving as a focal point for recovery.  It appears that this school has thought ahead, and was prepared.

NYC School Teacher Simonette Mapes-Crupi Found Brutally Stabbed To Death

New York, NY
A New York City school teacher was found stabbed to death inside her Staten Island apartment Thursday afternoon.

Simonette Mapes-Crupi, 29, was found face down in a pool of blood by her husband, Jonathan Crupi, in their New Springville apartment around 1:50 p.m.  Authorities said she was stabbed multiple times.

Police tape blocked off off a portion of the condominium complex on Forest Hills Road, hours after police said they got a 911 call from the victim’s husband.

Police initially looked into a home invasion theory, but sources told CBS 2 there was no evidence to support it, other than a home in disarray, CBS 2′s Sean Hennessey reported.

Jonathan Crupi has been questioned by police.  Police have not made any arrests yet nor have they released a possible motive.

Neighbor Rachel Havia said she came home and saw police everywhere. The victim’s relatives were also extremely distraught.

Interestingly, just a week ago, the teacher posted a near-death experience on her Facebook page, writing: “Crupi and I survived a shootout today…Thank God we are ok…To all the wanna be gangstas of Staten Island (who say they are from Brooklyn but really aren’t), be grateful you have what you have and stop trying to live a lifestyle you will never understand.”

Self Defense in Schools

In Bronx, NY, an 8-year old slashes a 9-year old with a double-edged razor.  He brings the blade to school with him every day because "some of the kids don’t like him".  In Indianapolis, IN, a 17-year old is expelled from school for bringing a stun gun and setting it off to ward off bullies.  Stories like these seem to be happening with increasing frequency, and the natural question is, why?

Self-defense is a fundamental right.  Adults have done far worse things to defend themselves, and they are found not guilty.  That right extends to school children, right?

Not in my opinion.

The US Supreme Court ruled in Tinker v. Des Moines that without any evidence that a rule is necessary to avoid substantial interference with school discipline or the rights of others, it is not permissible.  Bringing a double-edged razor or a stun gun to school can clearly disrupt school discipline and the rights of others.  I believe that to be self-evident, so I won't waste time explaining how.  In any event, it is right for a school to have rules prohibiting the possession, and use, of such things.  To have a rule that prohibits weapons, and then to have a student not only bring a weapon, but use it without providing the most severe consequence possible is to make a mockery of the rule, and thepurpose for the rule.

At issue as well is the climate of a school that sets up such a situation in the first place.  In both of the above cases, allegations were made that the administration had been told of the bullying, and in the Bronx case, that the school was prone to violence.  If a person does not feel that the authorities will protect them, they will feel a strong urge to protect themselves.  This is particularly dangerous with children, as their very nature is prone to bad decision-making.  This is why we typically don't put children in charge of life-or-death situations.  Yet when we don't protect our children, that is exactly what we are doing.

Schools need to take a long, hard look at themselves, and what they do to protect children.  I am appalled at the stories I hear of administrators who will 'cover up' acts of violence in order to avoid the appearance of having a violent school.  It is time for such folks to find a new line of work, as they are not fit to serve children.  Like alcoholism, the problem cannot be solved without first acknowledging the extent of the problem.

In this era of high stakes testing, high test scores are threatened by violence, and the fear it produces.  You want better test scores?  Create a safe learning environment, and allow the children to relax and learn.  This won't happen when educators are in denial.

The instinct of self-preservation is a strong one, and should be a sign for educators that something isn't right.

Stop making excuses and do something.

Bronx School Slash: 'Attacker' is EIGHT Years Old

Bronx, NY
An 8-year-old Bronx boy today slashed a classmate across the neck with a double-edged razor — at a school that’s already canceled graduation once because of out-of-control behavior, cops and parents said.

Police sources said the pint-sized perp told cops he brings the blade to school with him every day because some of the kids don’t like him, ABC-TV reported.

The boy snapped on the playground during lunch after feuding with his 9-year-old victim at the violence-plagued school — PS 132 in the Morrisania section — on and off for the past few days, a law-enforcement source told The Post.

The victim had yelled, “B----!” at the boy just before he was cut, sources told ABC.

The stunned 9-year-old was sliced on the back of his neck — a “deep laceration’’ just inches from an artery — shortly before noon, sources said.

He was rushed to Bronx Lebanon Hospital fewer than three blocks away, where he was received stitches and was listed in serious but stable condition.
