An 18-year old student at Carver High School was arrested after shooting a 15-year old student.
The high school was conducting a fire drill when the School Resource Officer heard shots being fired.
The victim was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Former School Janitor Arrested for Child Sex Offense

Jose Licinio Portillo-Urrutia, a former custodian at Sedgefield Elementary School in Greensboro, was arrested and accused of a sex crime with a student.

Violent Acts Increase at Junior Highs, Report Shows

Recently released North Carolina School Report Cards from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) show the numbers of criminal or violent acts are up at both junior highs in McDowell County.
Each year, the state releases report cards that provide parents and those invested in the school system an overview of how schools are doing based on student and school performance and school safety.
This year’s report on the 2011-12 school year shows that violent acts, or acts of crime or violence reports in school, at a bus stop, on a school bus, on school grounds or during off campus, school-sponsored activities at both schools increased last school year.
At East McDowell Junior High, the number of criminal or violent acts increased from four during the 2010-11 school year to nine during the 2011-12 school year.
East Principal Charles Gaffigan says that the additional acts of crime or violence were a result of a few bad decisions by a handful of students.

Former North Carolina Scoutmaster Admits He Molested Boys

A former scoutmaster in North Carolina admits he molested as many as 10 boys in the early 1970s.
The file on Thomas J. Menghi Jr. is just one among thousands of pages on suspected abusers kept by the Boy Scouts of America and released under a recent court order.
He tells The Associated Press he was usually drunk when he had sex with boys in Troop 786 in Fayetteville.
Memos in Menghi's file from 1974 show other scout leaders contemplated whether to report the abuse to the police, but were directed not to by a national official.

Student Violence Against Teachers Spikes In North Carolina

There's a rise in the number of teachers attacked at schools in North Carolina.
Right now, a local teacher is suspended without pay after slapping a student who she says attacked her.
"I got in front of him and said you need to pull your pants up. So he pushed me and said get the ‘F’ out of my face," said Pat Frost, Anson County High School teacher.
Frost says an 18 year-old student attacked her in the hallway during summer school.
When she followed him to the parking lot to ask his name, she says he lunged at her so she smacked him. Frost says he then punched her.
The school board has suspended her without pay.
"Tell me. If it were your daughter who was pushed and cursed at in this manner... would it be ok for me to walk away because that's what the school system is saying... I should have just walked away," said Frost.
Frost’s attorney says what happened between Frost and the student at Anson High School raises bigger concerns about a growing issue - violence against teachers.
There were more than 1, 156 assaults on school personnel in North Carolina last year.
That's up almost 200 from the previous school year and almost 300 from 889 cases in 2006.

N.C. Outlaws Fake Social Media Profiles of School Officials

Less than a month after the Supreme Court’s ruling upholding the right to make false claims, North Carolina has made it illegal for students to make fake social media profiles mocking school administrators.
Changes to the School Violence Prevention Act signed into law July 15 prohibit students from making fake accounts or posting real or doctored photos of school employees with the intent to “intimidate” or “torment.”
Students who violate the law can be charged with a class two misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $1,000 fine and 30 days probation for a first offense.
Some have questioned the new law’s constitutionality, given that several terms are not defined in the legislation.
The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina opposed the bill, but was only successful in getting the line “with the intent to embarrass” removed from the original proposal.

Police: Man Fires Gun before Running onto West Charlotte HS Campus
Charlotte, NC
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a man ran onto the campus of West Charlotte High School after shooting a gun into the air.
Officers arrested the man after he ran to the school Wednesday.
They said he fired the gun during a fight nearby.
Nobody was hurt.

Shooting Reported at Chapel Hill Elementary School
Chapel Hill, NC
Chapel Hill police are responding to a reported shooting at Mary Scroggs Elementary School at 501 Kildaire Road, according to Police Chief Chris Blue.
The school was temporarily locked down due to “an incident with an injured person,” according to a school official, who added that all the students are safe.

Violent Acts in CMS Up, Sexual Assaults Reported in Middle School

The domestic violence advisory board says CMS has a high rate of violence in schools including sexual violence.
The board says in 2011 violent acts went up 29 percent within CMS.
There were 40 reports of sexual assaults and 30 of those involved middle schoolers, according to the report.
The group presented the information to the Mecklenburg County School board during Tuesday night's meeting.
Organizer Melissa Siegel works with the group "Love Speaks Out" which speaks to teens about domestic violence.

This week, a 10-year-old boy was walking home from Pine Valley Elementary School when two people started following him in their car, according to a news release from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
