There's a rise in the number of teachers attacked at schools in North Carolina.
Right now, a local teacher is suspended without pay after slapping a student who she says attacked her.
"I
got in front of him and said you need to pull your pants up. So he
pushed me and said get the ‘F’ out of my face," said Pat Frost, Anson
County High School teacher.
Frost says an 18 year-old student attacked her in the hallway during summer school.
When she followed him to the parking lot to ask his name, she says he lunged at her so she smacked him. Frost says he then punched her.
The school board has suspended her without pay.
"Tell
me. If it were your daughter who was pushed and cursed at in this
manner... would it be ok for me to walk away because that's what the school system is saying... I should have just walked away," said Frost.
Frost’s attorney says what happened between Frost and the student at Anson High School raises bigger concerns about a growing issue - violence against teachers.
There were more than 1, 156 assaults on school personnel in North Carolina last year.
That's up almost 200 from the previous school year and almost 300 from 889 cases in 2006.

Colleges See Street-Like Incidents of Black-on-Black Violence

Many African American parents fear that the same violence they worry will affect their young adult children on the streets at home will find them in their quest for higher education. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 93 percent of the 9,000 blacks murdered in 2007, were killed by other blacks. Blacks are six times more likely to be victims of violent crimes than whites and eight times more likely to be the perpetrator, the report said.
Though college campuses don’t have the same level of violence as urban streets, some of the same kinds of crimes occur there, experts said—shootings, stabbings and assaults as a result of senseless disagreements and perceived slights. Even some students who are high academic achievers resort to street behavior when faced with a conflict at college, experts said.

Teachers Attacked by Students Show Signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Six years ago, Norma Brown, a Chicago Public Schools teacher for more than 30 years, took a stand against a fourth-grader who refused to remove his baseball hat in the school's lunchroom.
A fight ensued. A group of 11- and 12-year-olds surrounded Brown, yelling and cursing. One cocked his fist and punched her squarely in the left eye. Brown stumbled for the door and two girls, a sixth-grader and an eighth-grader, began punching and kicking her. She fought to remain standing.
"I knew that if I fell to the ground they would stomp on me," she said recently. "When you fall, you're dead meat."
What happened to Brown may be extreme, but police records show reports of violent attacks against teachers and school staff have risen sharply in Illinois over the past decade. As doctors and psychologists work to return these assault victims to the classrooms, there is growing acceptance that they may suffer more than physical injuries.

Police Probe Chantilly Middle School Shooting
Chantilly, VA
Two students at Rocky Run Middle School in Chantilly, Va., were injured after being shot at by a BB or pellet gun, according to Fairfax County Police.
Officials said a boy and girl were shot at just before 10 a.m. by an unknown person outside of the school, which is located on the 4400 block of Stringfellow Road in Chantilly.
One of the students was transported to a local hospital. Officials said the injuries are not considered to be serious.

The teenager is understood to have gone on a rampage at Toot Hill School, in Bingham, Notts, stabbing some students in the head and neck.
After the incident on Wednesday some students had to go to hospital to be tested for infections including hepatitis and HIV.
The school said pupils were stabbed with a lancet, but police believe a diabetic pen was used.

Bronx School Slash: 'Attacker' is EIGHT Years Old

An 8-year-old Bronx boy today slashed a classmate across the neck with a double-edged razor — at a school that’s already canceled graduation once because of out-of-control behavior, cops and parents said.
Police sources said the pint-sized perp told cops he brings the blade to school with him every day because some of the kids don’t like him, ABC-TV reported.
The boy snapped on the playground during lunch after feuding with his 9-year-old victim at the violence-plagued school — PS 132 in the Morrisania section — on and off for the past few days, a law-enforcement source told The Post.
The victim had yelled, “B----!” at the boy just before he was cut, sources told ABC.
The stunned 9-year-old was sliced on the back of his neck — a “deep laceration’’ just inches from an artery — shortly before noon, sources said.
He was rushed to Bronx Lebanon Hospital fewer than three blocks away, where he was received stitches and was listed in serious but stable condition.

Violent School Bullying Sparks Outrage

Parents at Hogan Middle School in Vallejo are rightfully concerned for the safety of their children after recent incidents of violent bullying were caught on video and posted on the Internet.
Ladonna Williams was outraged after watching footage of her 11-year-old daughter being brutally beaten by another Hogan Middle School student. Other students watched and cheered the fight, which occurred on campus more than a month ago.
Williams’ sixth-grade daughter suffered bruises, a swollen eye, pulled-out hair and numerous scrapes – and she has yet to return to school.

160 Girls, Teachers Poisoned at School in Afghanistan

On Tuesday 160 schoolgirls and teachers were admitted to a hospital after a suspected poisoning at a school in Afghanistan's northern Takhar province -- the third such large-scale attack against female students this year.
The female students, ranging in age from 10 to 20 years old, had been poisoned in their classrooms by a contaminated spray that caused the girls to suffer from vomiting, headaches, and dizziness. The attack occurred at the Ashan Dara Girls School in Talokhan.
A similar attack occurred last week in which over 120 teachers and students were admitted to a local hospital.

Rape Reported at North Central High School

After revelations of a reported rape at North Central High School, school officials said they are cooperating with the police investigation and insist the school system “continually engages in careful supervision” of students.
But on April 9, police said, an 18-year-old boy at the school reportedly forced a 16-year-old girl to perform various sex acts with him. The boy, Danny Roads, 18, who officials said was developmentally disabled, forced the other teen into an empty classroom, where the incident allegedly took place, according to court documents.
A teacher overheard other students talking about the incident and confronted them, then upon hearing the allegations immediately reported what she had learned to school administrators, who then talked with the teen girl, then informed an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer working at the school of the allegations.

Police: Easton High School Attack Plot Thwarted

Authorities have arrested an Easton High School student accused of planning on using explosive devices and firearms to attack the building and students.
The Talbot County Sheriff's Office reports that on Wednesday, April 25, Easton High School officials received information that a current student at the school was planning an attack on the building and students. The information was initially reported to the Easton Police Department. This initial report and information later led to a location in Talbot County, which involved the Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. The Sheriff's Office later took primary control of the investigation.
Investigators said that through the course of initial and followup interviews, the student at the center of the threat was interviewed and subsequently arrested on April 25. The student was detained and charged as a juvenile with the crimes of false statement to detonate an explosive device, and manufacture and/or possession of a destructive device. The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services took custody of the child on the day of the arrest. The student was held in detention pending a formal juvenile detention hearing in the Talbot County Circuit Court.

As rumors swirled about a violent confrontation today at Flagler Palm Coast High, school officials beefed up security and sent phone calls to parents in hopes of quelling the fears they believe originated with a few students -- who just wanted a day off.
There's apparently "no validity" to chatter that someone affiliated with a gang will cause harm at the school, Director of Student Services Katrina Townsend said Thursday. Instead, she said, it appears a handful of students concocted the tale because they wanted to get out of class.

A Bluffton Middle School teacher is accused of grabbing a seventh-grader by his shirt collar, forcing him under a desk and telling him, "This is what the Nazis do to Jews," according to the Bluffton Police Department.
The student's parents decided to press charges.
A lawyer for social studies teacher Patricia Mulholland said she was merely conducting an "interactive lesson" on the Holocaust during a class Wednesday.

A fight between two female students on a Groveport Madison school bus was caught on camera and posted online, 10TV’s Glenn McEntyre reported Friday.

A 12-year-old boy originally disciplined for running in the school hallway was arrested Wednesday after a teacher said he hit her.
The incident happened at Brookside Elementary School, or Indianapolis Public Schools’ School 54.
A teacher told police the boy was put in the school’s time out room after it was discovered he was running in the halls. When she returned to the room so the 12-year-old could go home for the day, the teacher said he pushed her against the wall and ran upstairs. Upon finding him, the teacher was then punched in the arm, she told police.

Mom Helps Daughter Beat Someone Up

Officers are searching for a Richmond County mother accused of helping her daughter beat up a high school girl. The fight happened Tuesday at Richmond Academy.
Thanks to video evidence, officers believe they have proof a woman named Laura Leeh Davis was right in the middle of it all.
