IASP Secretaries Conference

I had the honor and privilege today of presenting at a breakout session at the Indiana Association of School Principals State Secretaries Conference.  My presentation was on Being the Shield, developing the mindset for school safetyBeing the Shield is a new analogy for school safety that I have been thinking on, and this was the first time I shared it with others.

The ladies in attendance were very attentive, and as usual, I learned from them as much as they learned from me.  I was impressed with their professionalism, their dedication, and their desire to protect children.

I met one in particular, I wish I could recall her name, who was pointed out to me by another secretary.  She is a secretary at Henryville High School, recently reopened after being devastated by an EF3 tornado last March. She was in the office when the school bus, carrying 11 elementary kids, returned to the school minutes ahead of the tornado.  She shielded them in the office as Hell's Fury tore into the school.  I couldn't help but admire her for her strength for children, and here she was telling me how my presentation gave her chills.  We shared a hug, and blessed each other.

Everytime I do these presentations, I met them most wonderful people, and their stories humble me.

Thank you all for Being the Shield.

Teachers Attacked by Students Show Signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Chicago, IL
Six years ago, Norma Brown, a Chicago Public Schools teacher for more than 30 years, took a stand against a fourth-grader who refused to remove his baseball hat in the school's lunchroom.

A fight ensued. A group of 11- and 12-year-olds surrounded Brown, yelling and cursing. One cocked his fist and punched her squarely in the left eye. Brown stumbled for the door and two girls, a sixth-grader and an eighth-grader, began punching and kicking her. She fought to remain standing.
"I knew that if I fell to the ground they would stomp on me," she said recently. "When you fall, you're dead meat."

What happened to Brown may be extreme, but police records show reports of violent attacks against teachers and school staff have risen sharply in Illinois over the past decade. As doctors and psychologists work to return these assault victims to the classrooms, there is growing acceptance that they may suffer more than physical injuries.

Update: No Missing Kids, Despite Big Response to Reported Abduction

Boston, MA
Boston Police spent several hours yesterday scouring the Dudley Triangle after a report of a possible child abduction set off a huge response in the vicinity of the John Winthrop School on Brookford St.
Police say today that the report appears to have been false- and that no children have been reported missing overnight in the city of Boston.

The action started around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday when police were summoned to the Winthrop School. Three children who had been dismissed from the school returned to tell the principal that they witnessed an older while male stuffing a duffle bag into the trunk of a car on Hartford Street, about a block from the school. The witnesses— described by police as "very young"— claimed that they heard a girl screaming from the duffle bag. The suspect was described as driving away in a black sedan.

"All students at the school were accounted for, there was no indication of foul play and no missing children in the city," said Officer Grant. "We're handling it as an open investigation, but we're not sure the witnesses actually saw what they said they saw."

Child Abduction Digest 6-2-12

Sacramento, CA
A heart-pounding moment for a 12-year-old Sacramento boy Friday morning.

The boy was walking to school on Lincoln Village Drive at about 8:30 a.m. when a white van pulled up beside him and the driver tried to grab his arm, said Sacramento County sheriff's Deputy Jason Ramos.

About the same time, the boy told authorities that the van's sliding side door opened and he saw another man crouched in the back.

The boy pulled his arm away and ran home to report what happened. He was not hurt.

Cleveland police said an arrest has been made in connection with the attempted abduction of a 12-year-old girl from a west side train station earlier this week.

A department spokeswoman said the man was arrested on Silk Avenue at about 3 p.m. His name has not yet been released.

Investigators released surveillance photos of the suspect Thursday.

The incident happened at about 7:40 a.m. Wednesday as the girl was getting off the train at the Puritas Avenue station.

Milwaukee, WI
Even though her 4-year-old girl is back home, a Milwaukee mother said she wants to set the record straight about her daughter's abduction from Starms Elementary School.

Charity, 4, doesn't want to leave her house these days or her mother's side.

"She's right up under me. She sleeps with me. I can't go to the restroom. I literally have to hold her hand, and she has to hold mine," Paula said.

Mom Paula said her little girl is suffering nightmares after being taken from her school last week.
"She never came to the office. I said, 'What is taking her so long?'" Paula said.

Paula said she waited 15 to 20 minutes for Charity.

"The teacher came kind of with an attitude, 'You looking for Charity?' Rolling her neck," Paula said.

"'A lady came in here with a curly wig on and said that you said that she could take her so that's what I did. I gave her Charity, and they went out the back door.'"

Child Abduction Digest 6-1-12

San Diego, CA
Authorities reached out to the public Thursday for help in identifying a man who tried to abduct schoolgirls on Mountain View-area roadsides on three occasions this month.

In all of the cases, the would-be kidnapper, a white or Hispanic man who appeared to be in his 50s, drove alongside the victims and offered them rides as they were walking home from Emerson Elementary School, according to San Diego police.

Each of the girls -- two of them 10 years old and two 11 -- refused to get into the sedan, at which point the man offered them money to do so, SDPD public affairs Lt. Andra Brown said.
"When the girls again declined, he yelled, `Get in the car now! The girls ran away and were unharmed,'' Brown said. "In one case, the (man) followed the girl to her yard.''

Ft. Wayne, IN
Police were searching for a man Thursday who reportedly abducted a 9-year-old girl and released her a few miles away.

Police said the child was riding her bicycle around the intersection of Boone and Osage streets, near Nebraska Elementary School, when a white male exited a blue, full-sized van and grabbed her. The man forced the child into the van and drove her to the 3800 block of Wenonah Lane, where he let her go, police said.

The child appeared uninjured, but police are actively pursuing a search for the suspect.

The vehicle was described as a blue to light blue van with a sunroof and tan, leather seats.

The man was described as muscular, between 20 and 30 years old, with buzzed-cut blonde or light-brown hair. He was clean shaven and wearing a gray, v-neck tank top and dark-blue jean shorts. The man had two tattoos: a heart with vines and a cross-eyed skull with the word "love" written underneath it.

Cleveland police released photos of a man who allegedly tried to abduct a 12-year-old girl from a west side RTA Rapid station while she was going to school.
The incident happened at about 7:40 a.m. Wednesday as the girl was getting off the train at the Puritas Avenue station.

According to the police report, a man grabbed the girl by the left arm, but she broke free. As she started to run away, the man grabbed her by the arm again, pushed her up against a fence and then tried to push her into a shrub.

The girl told officers the man tried to slap her in the face, but she blocked his hand.

The driver of a car saw what was happening, stopped and then asked if everything was OK. The girl was then able to break free and run toward her school, Puritas Community School, where she alerted staff of the incident. The man ran toward the Rapid station.

Child Abduction Digest 5-19-12

Palm Beach County, FL
A Loxahatchee mother says her 13-year old daughter was able to avoid an abduction in western Palm Beach County on Monday. That incident was not the first of its kind reported in that part of the county this week.

School administrators are warning parents in both Loxahatchee and Wellington about reports of a man in a car approaching young females; some as they walk home from school. The warning was scary for parents in both communities who got a notice in their email inbox this week warning them about two recent reports of a man trying to lure young children into his car.

Holyoke, MA

Holyoke police are on the lookout for a suspect after they say a man approached a young girl on her way into the Morgan Elementary School at about 9 a.m. Friday.

Authorities say the 8-year-old was walking into school when a man approached and grabbed her. Luckily a bystander quickly stepped in.

A man, described as tan, wearing a blue Hawaiian shirt, white shoes and jean shorts, is now the main focus of the Holyoke Police Department's investigation into an attempted abduction. It halted after-school activities Friday afternoon.

In just a matter of hours, there were three schools and three alleged sightings of the man.

Crimes Against Children

I regularly post digests on Child Abduction and Anti-Child Pornography.  As a parent, it worries me how many of these stories are in the news.  One of the reasons I do it is to show others how prevalent these crimes against others are.  As a human being, I am furious that there are wolves out there that prey on the innocent.

I wonder how these children get exposed to the wolves, and then I remember how my youngest was exposed to a predator, who stole her innocence when she was six.  She was with her older sister, who was a high school student.  After getting off of school, her older sister would drive to the elementary school to pick her up.  They would then go to the apartment of the friend of the elder daughter to hang out.  This friend had a younger brother, who was about six years older than my youngest.

She was walking down a hall looking for a restroom, when she saw him playing video games.  She asked him what he was doing, and he told her to sit in his lap.  My daughter, age six, the soul of innocence, sat in his lap to watch the game, and he proceeded to molest her.

It is the nature of innocence to be trusting, and that is what evil people use to gain access.  The boy had priors, and his mother never told us.  We were in denial that anything could happen, yet it did.

We didn't find out what happened for a couple of years, until a Good Touch-Bad Touch program at my daughter's elementary school.  While still trying to process my rage, we had to take my daughter to the Division of Family Services to be interviewed.  They verified through the interview that it had happened.  To cap off the day, my wife and I had to sign an agreement that we would never allow that piece of human trash to come onto our property.  They didn't understand that having him back onto my property was what I wanted.  That would have given me the excuse I needed to remove him from this earth.

My wife and I watched after her and loved her, but it was not enough to keep her safe.  The numerous stories I found validate that, but it doesn't make me feel better, nor does it quench the rage I feel.  Rather than do something that will scar my daughter worse, I channel my rage into activities such as this.  If I can't take direct action against these perverts, the epitome of human evil, then I can shine the light on their dark, twisted world.

If my work can spare one child the horror faced by my daughter, then it will have been worth it.

Join me in my fight.

Bradenton, FL

Police are investigating a report of a possible child abduction attempt near Prine Elementary School in Bradenton.

The suspect, described as a white male who is approximately 40 years old, had not been apprehended by Silver City Police at press time on Thursday, but Capt. Creepy Vans Rattle Families, School Offers Safety Tips

San Clemente, CA
Local elementary school officials are warning parents to reinforce their children's wariness of strangers after two suspicious incidents have rattled local families.

Both incidents involved white panel vans, but that appears to be the only similarity. Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino said the department is investigating both incidents, but they don't appear to be connected.

Tuesday afternoon, a white panel van parked near Camino Capistrano and Via Canon made a U-turn and crept along behind two elementary school students walking home, according to an email sent to parents by the Concordia and Palisades elementary school principals.
