Paulsboro Schools Closed, Evacuations Expanded Following Train Derailment

Paulsboro Schools were closed for the week following a train derailment. The train was carrying vinyl chloride, a very flammable, toxic substance.
There was confusion among the residents as they attempted to locate shelter. find their children, and deal with the disruptions in their lives.
While being in school was considered safer than being outside, a town-wide shelter-in-place order convinced school officials that the best place for children to be is with their parents.

Jersey City Police Arrest Second Suspect in School Lunchtime Shooting

A suspect was arrested in Nov. 16 for a shooting of a 17-year old during a lunch break at Snyder High School. Police have arrested a second suspect. No reason for the shooting has been given.

Is Your Child's School Bus Safe?

New Jersey State Police say that a preliminary investigation showed that one of the rear wheels of a school bus became detached during a crash that landed nearly three dozen students in the hospital with minor injuries.
The bus crashed near mile-marker 34 of the Garden State Parkway northbound around 3:30 p.m. Monday. It was carrying students from Charter Tech in Somers Point, N.J.
Members of the State Police Commercial Vehicle Inspection Team were at the scene investigating the cause of the crash. State Police say that a preliminary investigation revealed that one of the rear wheels detached but the exact cause of the crash still wasn't clear.
Tom Dugan, the owner of Safety Bus, says it's still unclear what caused the crash. He did however confirm to NBC10 a New Jersey Motor Vehicle report that the bus recently needed re-inspected after an earlier annual inspection showed some problems that needed corrected.

Autumn Pasquale Disappearance, Death May Be Linked To String Of Attempted Kidnappings In NJ

The search for missing New Jersey 12-year-old Autumn Pasquale ended last night with the discovery of the girl’s body in a recycling container, and police are currently investigating the girl’s disappearance and murder.
While no arrests have been made in Autumn Pasquale’s kidnapping, police have admitted the case may be linked to a series of attempted abductions in Bergen County in recent weeks.
Fox News spoke to local law enforcement officials about Autumn Pasquale’s case, and cops say that they are investigating a link to attempted abductions in Westwood, Oradell, Hawthorne, New Milford, Maywood, Hackensack, Fair Lawn and Ridgewood, all in Bergen County.
Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino said that while police are examining all leads, the possibility of a connection between the kidnapping attempts and Pasquale’s death is being examined:

'You Should Take it Seriously,' Note Warns, Prompting Evacuation of North Hunterdon High School

North Hunterdon High School was evacuated this morning after a threatening note was found in the bathroom, said District Communications Coordinator Maren Smagala.
The note, which was written on the bathroom stall of the boys room near the athletic office, read: “Girls locker room, you should take it seriously,” police said.
The note was first found by a student at about 8:45 a.m. and the school was evacuated at about 9:15 a.m., police said.
Detective Tom Hash and two other township police officers searched the girls' locker rooms and then other parts of the school, looking for anything suspicious, but found nothing, police said.
The school was re-opened after about 30 minutes, and students were let back inside the building.
Detective Hash, who is also the school's Student Resource Officer, will remain at the school for the rest of the day, police said.

New Jersey Teacher Voted Best of 2011 Accused of Sexual Assault Involving 15-Year-Old Student

A New Jersey high school teacher who was named one of the state’s best in 2011, then arrested for having sex with a 15-year-old student, posted bail Tuesday, authorities said.
Acting Essex County prosecutor Carolyn Murray said West Orange High School teacher Erica DePalo, 33, of Montclair, was charged Friday with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
DePalo, who was named Essex County’s Teacher of the Year in 2011, allegedly began a sexual relationship with the unidentified male in June and continued sexual contact with him until late August.
The student was in DePalo’s honors English class, West Orange Detective Louis Mignone said in a news release. DePalo also worked as the school's junior varsity tennis coach, authorities said.

Principal Paschal Tennaro and the police said the threat alluded to the date of Thursday, June 7, although he would not elaborate. Talk of the threat spread rapidly after officials sent a letter to parents earlier in the week informing them of the matter, and school activities were canceled on Wednesday night.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of a Trenton Central High School student Monday afternoon, police said yesterday.

Student Fires Shot Inside Atlantic City Charter School

Two boys, 9 and 11, are facing charges of unlawful possession of a weapon after bringing a handgun to Oceanside Charter School in Atlantic City on Thursday.
They were released to the custody of their parents Thursday evening. Police are still investigating whether any adults will face charges as well.
Atlantic City Police say one single shot was fired inside the school bathroom earlier in the day.

An Ocean County, New Jersey man was charged today with sexually abusing a 14-month-old boy and streaming footage of the sexual assault over the Internet, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.
Rodford W. Brindley, Jr., 67, of Toms River, New Jersey, was arrested and charged by complaint with one count of sexual exploitation of a child. He is scheduled today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lois Goodman in Trenton federal court.
According to the complaint, law enforcement in Ohio had previously discovered Brindley through their own cybercrime investigation and had engaged in online chats with him. On April 2, 2012, Ohio law enforcement was engaged in an online chat with Brindley when he began sexually assaulting a toddler, recording and sharing the assault over the Internet using a webcam. Ohio law enforcement determined that Brindley was an Ocean County, New Jersey resident and immediately contacted New Jersey law enforcement, which obtained arrest and search warrants.

A Roman Catholic priest pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of violating federal child sexual exploitation laws, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.
Bartley Sorensen, 63, pleaded guilty before United States District Judge Alan N. Bloch to receiving and possessing visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that Sorensen, a priest at St. John Fisher Church in Churchill, received and possessed many images of minors being sexually abused between June 2011 and December 9, 2011.
“This case is particularly disturbing because it involves a priest, a man in a position of great trust, viewing horrific and degrading images of children,” U.S. Attorney Hickton said. “Consumers of these violent sexual images fuel the production of more images, and the demand for increasingly extreme content. This is not a ‘victimless’ crime.”

Two Mount Olive High School Students Hit by School Bus

Two Mount Olive High School students walking to school were injured and taken to the hospital after they were hit by a school bus as they crossed Corey Road on Thursday morning, May 17.
According to police, a 911 call about the incident was received at 7:02 a.m. Police responding to the scene interviewed several witnesses to the crash and determined that sun glare affected the school bus driver's vision, police said.
The two teenage students were transported to Morristown Medical Center for minor injuries sustained as a result of the crash. Both students are female. One is 15 years old, the other is 16.
The police department was assisted by the Flanders Fire Department and an ambulance from the Hackettstown Regional Medical Center.

Union County College has had six bomb threats in four weeks — five at the Cranford campus and one in Plainfield. The school has evacuated an unprecedented five times this month, officials say, most recently on Friday afternoon.
The repeated disruptions, which mirror strings of threats at the universities of Pittsburgh, Delaware and Maine in recent weeks, have led to investigations at the college by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. As yet, the callers have not been identified.

NJ Father Records Teachers Bullying His Autistic Child

A New Jersey father says he was so desperate to save his autistic son from he calls the bullying of teachers that he sent him to school with a hidden tape recorder.
Stuart Chaifetz says his 10-year-old who has autism has always been a very gentle, loving boy. So when he started getting reports from school that his son was hitting teachers, he knew something was wrong after putting a recorder in his pocket for a day.
Chaifetz says he caught his son's teachers gossiping, talking about alcohol and violently yelling at students.
He took the audio to the Cherry Hill School District, where officials fired one of the teachers involved after hearing the tape.
