In an excellent blog on the Safe Havens International website, Michael Dorn explains a central concept in the discussion of the place lockdown has in Active Shooter response.
Lockdown is the core of most K-12 schools' response. There are those who seek to change that, and our question is, why? The concept of lockdown still has merits. Those who put forth the new alternatives will point out mistakes made in other incidents as proof that the concept has failed, when in fact, the examples given are of failures in application.

Youth Minister Steven Harding Faces Child Molest, Sexual Misconduct with a Minor Charges
New Palestine, IN
A youth minister of a New Palestine church was arrested today and charge with child molestation and sexual misconduct with a minor for incidents that happened in 2009 and 2010. The girl was 13-years old at the time.
The girl's family contacted the Department of Child Services last spring, and a criminal investigation was started. Steve Harding, the suspect, denied the allegations last spring, but was given a polygraph test in November, which indicated he was lying when he said he did not have inappropriate contact with the girl.
The suspect is no longer listed in the church's website.

Violence against Bishop McDevitt Students Reported
Harrisburg PA
Three separate incidents of violence involving Bishop McDevitt students occurred in a 24-hour period, according to police.
A 15-year-old student was beaten and robbed as he left school on Tuesday. Three men wearing hoodies punched and kicked him and took his cellphone, police said.
The student is OK and back in school, but still very shaken up after what happened Tuesday, school officials said.
On Wednesday morning, a group shot at students and a school bus with a BB or pellet gun. No one was hurt in the incident.
The principal is increasing security and asking students not to walk alone and to move parking to the rear of the school.

Parents on Edge about Possible Child predator lurking around Monrovia
Monrovia, IN
Parents in and around Monrovia are on edge after two incidents there in the past week involving a possible child predator.
In the small enclave of Brookside, 5 miles west of Monrovia, there is concern and outright fear of a possible predator lurking in this rural Morgan County community.
A young girl opened the door of her Brookside home Friday morning and saw a man on the road standing near her yard and then screamed.
The sighting touched off a search of the area by Morgan County sheriff's deputies, who could not find the individual.
The incident conjured up memories of an incident last week when a stranger in a dark pickup truck allegedly offered a ride to a Brookside youth walking to the bus.
Friday, the Monrovia-Gregg school superintendent issued a system-wide notice to parents about the need for vigilance at school bus stops.
