Michael Dorn keynotes back-to-school session for Danbury Schools

Danbury, CT

Nearly 900 educators met the day before classes begin in Danbury, CT public schools.  They were taught some key school safety concepts by Michael Dorn, the Executive Director of Safe Havens, International.

One of the themes of his training was the Window of Life, a concept that helps people remember the top priorities when a crisis occurs: Protect yourself, protect others, protect your building, and contact Public Safety.  When people seek to know what to do in a crisis, they can remember these priorities.  This can get them on the right path to crisis response, as the first thirty seconds are critical.

This concept will be featured in Staying alive: How to act fast and survive deadly encounters, a book being published by Barron's Educational Series, being released in Spring of 2014.  The book is co-authored by Michael Dorn, Stephen Satterly, Sonayia Shepherd and Chris Dorn.

78 Texas School Districts Without Safety Plan

TEXAS
An audit of public schools in Texas, ordered by Governor Perry, found 78 school districts to be missing safety plans, or to have incomplete plans.

The majority of these districts were small, rural districts.

The Attorney General, Greg Abbott, said, "It doesn’t matter if a school district is very small,” he said. “The danger their students face is very large.”

Governor Perry ordered the audit after the Sandy Hook Elementary School attack.

Nebraska School Officials Accused of Covering Up Sexual Abuse

Omaha, NE
Authorities have accused a Nebraska school superintendent, principal and coach of failing to report the alleged sexual assault of a young high school wrestler by several teammates last summer.

The Nebraska State Patrol on Tuesday cited the three Maxwell Public Schools officials — Superintendent Danny Twarling, Principal Aubrey Boucher, and head wrestling coach Ryan Jones — for suspicion of failure to report child abuse or neglect, which is a misdemeanor.

Patrol Investigator Carlos Trevino, in an affidavit, said several members of the wrestling team were present during the alleged attack at a wrestling camp last summer. According to the alleged victim and two boys who said they witnessed but didn't take part in the attack, two team members held down the younger boy while another sodomized him with a soda bottle. On another occasion, at least one team member allegedly groped the victim on a school bus, Trevino said.

Confederate Flag Prom Dress Keeps TN Student from Celebration

Gibson County, TN
Gibson County High School senior Texanna Edwards was — like many of her classmates — looking forward to her prom last Saturday.

But Edwards didn’t get to attend because of her attire — a knee-length red dress decorated with bright blue stripes and white stars inside the stripes. The school’s colors are red, white and blue, but the dress resembles the controversial Confederate battle flag.

Edwards, 18, said she wasn’t allowed inside the prom after school officials told her the Confederate flag prom dress was “offensive and inappropriate.”

Indiana ACLU Sues Middle School Over Students' Facebook Posts

From the Indy Star
The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana has sued a Northern Indiana school that suspended three Grade 8 girls for Facebook posts violating bullying, harassment and intimidation rules.

"This conversation spanned numerous subjects, from the pain of cutting oneself while shaving to the girls' friendship, before turning to a discussion of which of their classmates they would kill if they had the chance," the suit continued. "At all times, the conversation was purely in jest and could not have been interpreted seriously, as is evidenced by the girls' repeated use of 'emoticons,' by their use of abbreviations indicative of humor, and by the nature and tone of the conversation.

"The girls were simply engaged in teenage banter."

Acts of Violence reported near Wogaman School

Dayton, OH
Two seemingly random acts of robbery were reported in the park behind Wogaman PreK-8 School on Tuesday.

One suspect in the first incident -- reported around 5:15 p.m. -- was booked into the Montgomery County Juvenile Justice Center on West Second Street on Tuesday night, according to a police report obtained Wednesday. The male is accused of being one of up to four black males who jumped a 16-year-old as he was walking westbound in the park behind the school.

According to Dayton Public Schools' website, the school is located at 920 McArthur Avenue and enrolls students from Pre-K through eighth grade.

Then, around 6 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 2700 block of Germantown Street, near Wogaman. The initial call came in as an armed robbery and the 18-year-old victim told police two black males approached him and told him to "give them his stuff," according to the police report.
