A parent portal used to access student grades was hit by a denial of service attack that shut it down for almost a week.
50 small school districts were denied access due to the attack. The Kentucky DOE worked with AT&T to repair the portal, and shore it up against further attacks.

Indiana Secured Schools Grants

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security has begun taking applications for the Indiana Secured Schools grant. According to the WISH TV report, "The Indiana Secured School Fund was created to provide matching grants to school corporations, charter schools or coalitions of schools to make schools safer by hiring school resource officers, conducting threat assessments, or purchasing equipment to restrict access to schools or to expedite notification of first responders."
This will provide up to $50,000 for school districts with 1,000 students or more, and up to $35,000 for smaller school districts. It is a matching grant, meaning the grant will match what the school district puts into the process. It is also a competitive grant, meaning the school district has to write a proposal, and have that proposal considered among others.
This appear to be an honest attempt by Indiana legislators to help schools shore up their safety efforts.

78 Texas School Districts Without Safety Plan

An audit of public schools in Texas, ordered by Governor Perry, found 78 school districts to be missing safety plans, or to have incomplete plans.
The majority of these districts were small, rural districts.
The Attorney General, Greg Abbott, said, "It doesn’t matter if a school district is very small,” he said. “The danger their students face is very large.”
Governor Perry ordered the audit after the Sandy Hook Elementary School attack.

Guns in our Schools

While shootings in schools are rare, the opportunity for it is not.
ABC2 News compiled a decade’s worth of data from the state of Maryland on out-of-school suspensions.
From the 2001/2002 school year through 2010/2011, 117 students were suspended for firearms throughout our area , which includes all seven school districts -- an average of about 15 per year.
"We would like to see zeros for every single year in all of our jurisdictions, but we don't," said Dr. Daniel Webster.
Webster is the director of the Center for Gun Policy and Research at Johns Hopkins' Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Firearm suspensions happen more often than many parents know.
Webster says to get that number to zero is not going to happen overnight.
He recently released a study called The Case for Gun Policy Reforms in America which, in part, calls for gun restriction to high risk groups, specifically those under 21-years-old.

School Buses Breaking the Rules

Every day, Georgia school buses transport more than a million students; with two of the largest fleets in the country operating right here in the Atlanta area. So we wondered, "How safe are your children when they step on a school bus?"
We conducted Open Records searches to get a handle on driver safety. We discovered that school bus drivers, like the rest of us, are not immune to getting tickets.
We requested red light camera tickets and moving violations for bus drivers in five school districts in the Atlanta area, including Gwinnett, Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton Counties as well as Atlanta Public Schools.
We found examples of buses running red lights and obtained the video to go along with some of those violations. We also discovered other serious infractions, including a hit and run involving a Dekalb School bus, Atlanta school buses involved in accidents and buses in Cobb and DeKalb Counties cited for speeding, some in school zones.

Districts Make Sure Drivers Buckle Up

I-Team 8’s investigation into seat belt use among bus drivers showed a disturbing trend: a growing number of drivers who aren’t buckled up behind the wheel.
But, we also found some local school districts that are taking a unique step to make sure drivers are buckled up.
It’s a simple change in color that’s making all the difference.
The push began after a Carmel-Clay school bus driver who wasn’t wearing his seat belt was bounced out of his seat. Surveillance video from that Carmel crash last May showed the driver’s seat belt hanging, unbuckled by his side, as his bus became a 30,000 pound battering ram, slamming through a fence and into a home.
The driver had been bounced out of his “air cushion” seat after hitting a bump. Fortunately, there were no children on board, and the driver wasn’t seriously hurt.
