The Future Looks Bright
Today I had the honor of speaking with Caleb, Alie, Brook and Emily, 5th grade students at an elementary school in South Carolina. Mrs. Raper, their teacher, contacted me a week or so ago about speaking to her students. Their school had recently changed their severe storm preparedness protocols, and the students had some ideas for making students safer during a tornado.
Mrs. Raper and I were able to connect via Skype, and I spent over twenty minutes answering the questions they had about tornadoes, and about my experiences with tornadoes. I was impressed with the depth of their questions. They had clearly prepared for the session, and were very polite and considerate. Their questions were also efficient, focusing on the task at hand instead of asking questions that were not connected to the discussion.
I have been in education for twenty-five years now, and Caleb, Alie, Brook and Emily gave me plenty of hope for our future. They were curious, they were inquisitive, they were respectful, and they were definitely motivated to better themselves through learning. Their parents should be proud, as should Mrs. Raper. It is easy to jump on the "public education is bad" bandwagon with the numerous awful stories we see in the media, but Mrs. Raper's leadership, and the behavior of her students, tells me the future is bright.
Caleb, Alie, Brook, Emily and Mrs. Raper, thank you for the honor of speaking with you today!

Principal Ejected from Richmond County School Board Committee Meeting after Outburst
Augusta, GA
An elementary school principal was escorted out of the Richmond County Board of Education committee meeting Tuesday by two school safety officers after yelling that board members ignored his concerns about mold and asbestos in his building.
Hartley Gibbons, the principal at Terrace Manor Elementary School, interrupted a discussion about the priority list of construction projects being funded by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
When his school showed up as number 46 of 63 schools on the list, Gibbons jumped from his seat and lunged at the microphone.
Board President Alex Howard banged his gavel and board member Jimmy Atkins told Gibbons he was out of order, but the principal continued.
“I want to let it be known that Terrace Manor is a 49-year-old building!” Gibbons yelled as School Safety and Security Chief Patrick Clayton guided him out of the building. “We got mold, asbestos, and we’re number 40-something on the list. We got zero dollars!”

Williamson Schools Fight Student Violence Aimed at Teachers
Nashville, TN
With violent student episodes aimed at teachers on the rise in Williamson County, the school board is asking for hundreds of thousand of dollars to be used for immediate help.
School spokesperson Carol Birdsong told Nashville's News 2 that so far this year, "around 50 worker compensation claims have been filed" in Williamson County due to violent behavior against teachers by students.
During a recent school board meeting, two recent cases were cited when requesting the additional funding.
The first incident occurred just last week in an elementary school where a teacher went to the hospital after being struck by a radio thrown by a student.
The second cited incident occurred earlier this month when a student shattered a school window with a chair.
At the urging of schools director Mike Looney, the school board requested the $348,000 immediately from county commissioners for two new separate classrooms staffed with teachers to help special education students with behavioral issues.
The report to the school board indicates most of the incidents are at the elementary school level.

The “Perfect Day” by LTC Dave Grossman, USA, ret.
The Rhino Den
In their dreams and fond imaginations, this is what will happen across all of the “Crusader nations” who are in Afghanistan. Pick a day, and everyone gives it their best shot. If just one in 1,000 of the Islamic people in our nations answer the call to Jihad, it will still be thousands of attackers … Some will opt for a “John Muhammad/Malvo,” whacking people from the trunks of cars, others for a Virginia Tech lone gunman in the school. Others will attack school buses, nannies will kill the kids, clerks will kill customers, cooks (in the elementary school?) will poison the Kool-aid, etc., etc.
The enemy thinks big, and we (with wishful thinking compounded by ignorance of their history) keep thinking small. The goal of this Perfect Day, in addition to terror, is to make us imprison (intern) our Islamic populations (as we did to the Japanese in WWII), thus making this a “war against Islam” instead of the current war against terrorist groups and Islamist fundamentalists.
