Sparks City, Nevada
An assailant brought a gun onto the campus of Sparks Middle School in Sparks City, Nevada, and opened fire.
After killing one student and critically wounding two others, the gunman allegedly turned the gun on himself.
Information is still sketchy. Nearby Agnes Risley Elementary School went to lockdown, and was evacuated, along with Sparks Middle School, to be reunited with their families at Sparks High School.
My thoughts and prayers are with the families and students of Sparks City.

Study: West Virginia Schools Prepared for Disaster

West Virginia schools are better equipped to handle disasters like Hurricane Sandy than many other states, according to a national report.
The state is one of only 17 in the country that meet all of Save the Children's standards for protecting students and those in child-care services in the case of a disaster, according to the annual National Report Card released by the organization.
In the report, West Virginia is commended for making sure all kindergarten through 12th-grade schools have a multiple disaster plan with measures in place to accommodate children with special needs during an event, the evacuation and relocation of students and then a plan to reunite them with their families.

'You Should Take it Seriously,' Note Warns, Prompting Evacuation of North Hunterdon High School

North Hunterdon High School was evacuated this morning after a threatening note was found in the bathroom, said District Communications Coordinator Maren Smagala.
The note, which was written on the bathroom stall of the boys room near the athletic office, read: “Girls locker room, you should take it seriously,” police said.
The note was first found by a student at about 8:45 a.m. and the school was evacuated at about 9:15 a.m., police said.
Detective Tom Hash and two other township police officers searched the girls' locker rooms and then other parts of the school, looking for anything suspicious, but found nothing, police said.
The school was re-opened after about 30 minutes, and students were let back inside the building.
Detective Hash, who is also the school's Student Resource Officer, will remain at the school for the rest of the day, police said.

Student, Reportedly in Two Face Costume, Kills Himself in Junior High Hallway

Students, parents, staff, and concerned citizens are mourning the loss of Cade Poulos after he died in a junior high school hallway Wednesday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Poulos, a 13-year-old Stillwater Junior High School student, shot himself in the head with a handgun before classes started Wednesday morning.
Students sprinted for the doors and the school building was quickly locked down and the school's eighth- and ninth-graders were evacuated.
Students at an adjacent elementary school were also evacuated.
At the time of the first and only gunshot, students were gathered throughout the school prior to the start of classes. There were dozens of kids near Poulos, who authorities say didn't leave a suicide note, when he shot himself.

Ohio College Safe, Reopened after Bomb Threat

Hiram College officials gave the "all clear" and reopened their northeast Ohio school Friday night, after an hours-long sweep found nothing suspicious following a bomb threat.
College spokesman Tom Ford said the campus community was alerted that the school was safe.
"Nothing was found that was suspicious," Ford said.
The college received an emailed bomb threat about 4 p.m. and ordered everyone on campus to evacuate. Ford said state and federal authorities were notified about the email, and safety teams with bomb-sniffing dogs checked the campus "room by room, building by building."

Student Shot on 1st Day of School near Baltimore
Baltimore, MD
A high school student has been injured in a shooting on the first day of classes at a Baltimore County high school.
County police say the Perry Hall High School student was flown to a hospital after being shot Monday morning.
Police did not provide any additional details, but Lt. Robert McCullough says there is no active shooter at the school.
The school was being evacuated. Police say students are being escorted to the nearby Perry Hall Shopping Center and parents can meet them there.
