Teacher Brings Loaded Gun To Minnesota School For Fear Of Newtown Shooting
MINNEAPOLIS, MN
A teacher from Seward Montessori School brought a gun, due to fear generated by the Sandy Hook Elementary attack.
A staff member reported the presence of the gun to the principal, who placed the school on lockdown.
The teacher has been placed on administrative leave.

Indiana Association of School Principals Fall Conference
Last weekend I had the honor of facilitating and presenting at both the State Assistant Principal's and the Principal's Conferences. Dr. Todd Bess recently took charge as the Executive Director for the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP), and he saw a 31% increase in attendance at the AP Conference, from 99 last year, to 130 this year. The Fall Conference, for the Principals, had around 450 attendees.
Dr. Bess also got some big names to keynote. Dr. Todd Whitaker, Col. Art Athens, Dr. Andrew Hargreaves, and the venerable Dr. Dave Emmert provided laughs, insights, and words of wisdom for those in attendance.
Teri Hoke and Penny Moss once again did their outstanding work to make these conferences hum, and the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown served as an excellent host as the greatest educational minds in Indiana got together to talk about education.
As the reigning Assistant Principal of the State of Indiana, I presided over the AP Conference Saturday and Sunday, until new Assistant Principals were crowned. Between those duties, and serving as a facilitator, my weekend was kept hopping.
Saturday, and again on Monday, I presented during breakout sessions to my fellow administrators. With the new evaluation models that are taking more and more of the administrator's time during the day, I wanted to share with them a research-based training program that they could use that wouldn't add a lot of time to their schedule.
My colleagues received the information well, and we had ourselves a couple of very productive discussions on school safety tenets. My audiences were receptive, professional, and I even came away with some new thoughts on school safety.
I think Dr. Bess has a bright future as the Executive Director of IASP, and the future is bright for the school administrators of Indiana.

Tucson School Locked Down after Violence Threat
Tucson, AZ
A Tucson school was placed on lockdown for five hours after an anonymous threatening note was found in the nurse’s office Friday, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
The principal of Flowing Wells Junior High School told police he found a the note, which implied the use of guns and other weapons in the school, around 9:30 a.m.
The school, located near Wetmore Road and La Cholla Boulevard, was immediately placed on lockdown and the Sheriff’s Department was called in to investigate, said Clarence Dupnik, a spokesman for the department.
Dupnik said the lockdown was kept in effect during the investigation in order to ensure a methodical and orderly threat assessment.
The Pima Regional Bomb Squad brought a specialty canine to the scene to detect explosives or guns, and the Department of Public Safety and the Davis-Monthan Airforce Base provided an additional two canines to join in the search, Dupnik said.

Principal Ejected from Richmond County School Board Committee Meeting after Outburst
Augusta, GA
An elementary school principal was escorted out of the Richmond County Board of Education committee meeting Tuesday by two school safety officers after yelling that board members ignored his concerns about mold and asbestos in his building.
Hartley Gibbons, the principal at Terrace Manor Elementary School, interrupted a discussion about the priority list of construction projects being funded by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
When his school showed up as number 46 of 63 schools on the list, Gibbons jumped from his seat and lunged at the microphone.
Board President Alex Howard banged his gavel and board member Jimmy Atkins told Gibbons he was out of order, but the principal continued.
“I want to let it be known that Terrace Manor is a 49-year-old building!” Gibbons yelled as School Safety and Security Chief Patrick Clayton guided him out of the building. “We got mold, asbestos, and we’re number 40-something on the list. We got zero dollars!”

Violence against Bishop McDevitt Students Reported
Harrisburg PA
Three separate incidents of violence involving Bishop McDevitt students occurred in a 24-hour period, according to police.
A 15-year-old student was beaten and robbed as he left school on Tuesday. Three men wearing hoodies punched and kicked him and took his cellphone, police said.
The student is OK and back in school, but still very shaken up after what happened Tuesday, school officials said.
On Wednesday morning, a group shot at students and a school bus with a BB or pellet gun. No one was hurt in the incident.
The principal is increasing security and asking students not to walk alone and to move parking to the rear of the school.

Patrols Up after School Shooting Plot
Albuquerque, NM
Three students have been suspended after a possible plot to shoot up Hoover Middle School.
Officials held a press briefing Thursday morning and police say they are now stepping up patrols around the school.
APS says it came to light Wednesday morning when one of them tipped the principal of the school about it, complete with a diagram.
Six kids were involved but only three are APS students.
The district does not think the threat was credible because no weapons were found at their homes.

Attempted ‘Lynching’ No Joke Say Parents of Black Boys in Arkansas School Incident

Two students were expelled and seven suspended from Wynne High School in Wynne, Ark., but parents of two Black boys, who were victims in what parents call an attempted lynching, are furious, saying justice has not been done and their fear for the safety of their children.
Cheryl Webster said all sorts of things went through her mind but she hadn’t imagined what she was told. Some boys tried to hang Mickey, her child, and his teammate, MaKye McDaniel, with a noose during football practice.
She is furious because of the assault, incensed that school officials waited three days to notify her, and outraged because they illegally questioned Mickey without her presence or knowledge, she told The Final Call. Oddly, before she even knew what was happening, the principal and assistant principal were profusely apologizing, she recalled.
She recounted her 14-year-old son’s ordeal: On Sept. 24, another student called him to the back of the weight room. One boy lifted him up while another tried to put a noose across his head and he had to fight them off, she said. “I don’t care if you’re White or Black. What happened to my son should never have happened,” Ms. Webster declared.

Former Educator Arrested on Sex Charges
Michigan City, MIThe former principal of South Adams Elementary School has been arrested in LaPorte County, Indiana on several counts of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student while he was a teacher there.
Brian Strauss has been charged with two felony counts of Sexual Misconduct with a Minor, one felony count of Child Solicitation and one felony count of Vicarious Sexual Gratification.
His arrest was the result of an investigation by the LaPorte County Sheriff's Department after a female student informed a detective on August 12, 2012 that she had been involved in an inappropriate relationship with Strauss while he was a school teacher employed by the South Central Community School Corporation. The alleged sexual relationship took place during the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 school years when the student was in ninth and tenth grade.
