2008 expulsion upheld by US District Court

Carson City, Nevada

In 2008 a former student used social media to reference Virginia Tech, and threatened violence against his high school classmates.  He was expelled, and a federal appeals court upheld the expulsion.

The court ruled that the threats were not protected by the First Amendment.

Student suicide leads to bullying allegations

Greenwich, CT

A tragic incident occurred a day after the first day of school at Greenwich High School.  A 15-year old boy died of a self-inflicted gunshot from a shotgun.

The investigation thus far has revealed some indications on social media sites that he faced troubles. On Google+ he posted a picture of himself holding a knife to his eye, along with the words, ""Hey if I were to stab my eye out due to school caused insanity, who would miss me?"

Shortly after that he posted, ""I have chosen to go with 3 peoples advice and kill myself," he wrote July 7 after telling his friends on the network that he had swallowed pills. "I just wish it was faster."

The attacker pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of assault and battery.

A third student who recorded the fight on a cell phone and posted it on social media was not charged.

Teen suicide prompted by sexual assault and social media?

San Francisco

A 15-year old girl committed suicide a week after passing out drunk at a party.  Three boys allegedly stripped her, sexually assaulted her, and drew lewd pictures on her private parts.  What's more, they took pictures and posted them on social media.

The girl's family had filed suit against the three boys, the parents that owned the house in which the party was held, and recently added a female classmate of the victim, who was in the room and encouraged the boys.

Eight days after the alleged assault, the victim called her mom to take her home from school.  She hung herself at home.

In my upcoming book Staying Alive: How to act fast and survive deadly encounters, a skill called "pattern-matching and recognition" is described, and warning signs of violence are described in detail.

As parents, these skills are important in that we might see signs of impending violence by our children, especially if the violence will be directed at themselves.  We think that, as parents, we will know if our children are contemplating suicide.  But sometimes that familiarity will blind us; we recognize the signs, but don't recognize their significance.

Coming out next May, Staying Alive is a must read for anyone who wants to survive deadly encounters.

Social Media Fuels High-School Attack

Oakley, CA
A bump in the hallway at Freedom High School fueled a profanity-laced argument. That, in turn, led to an argument on Instagram, a form of social media, which led to an attack in the school cafeteria the next day that put a girl in the intensive care unit of a hospital.

The attacker was arrested on suspicion of felonious battery.

Granite City School Suspends Multiple Students over Twitter Comments

Granite City, MO
A sexually inappropriate tweet about a teacher started it, but by the time administrators at Granite City High scoured the recent social media activity of students, at least 10 were suspended, unleashing an explosion of criticism online.

School administrators said they had no choice but to act because students violated school rules.

But an official with the Illinois chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union said the school district and others throughout the country are commonly going too far when it comes to monitoring Internet activity outside of school.
