Details from Sandy Hook released
Newtown Shooting
A Connecticut newspaper released some details of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary last December. The details included some of the actions by the shooter prior to the attack, and how the shooter entered the school.
Note that the Connecticut State Police have not yet released the official report, so anything else should be treated as speculation.

Student suicide leads to bullying allegations
Greenwich, CT
A tragic incident occurred a day after the first day of school at Greenwich High School. A 15-year old boy died of a self-inflicted gunshot from a shotgun.
The investigation thus far has revealed some indications on social media sites that he faced troubles. On Google+ he posted a picture of himself holding a knife to his eye, along with the words, ""Hey if I were to stab my eye out due to school caused insanity, who would miss me?"
Shortly after that he posted, ""I have chosen to go with 3 peoples advice and kill myself," he wrote July 7 after telling his friends on the network that he had swallowed pills. "I just wish it was faster."

Michael Dorn keynotes back-to-school session for Danbury Schools
Danbury, CT
Nearly 900 educators met the day before classes begin in Danbury, CT public schools. They were taught some key school safety concepts by Michael Dorn, the Executive Director of Safe Havens, International.
One of the themes of his training was the Window of Life, a concept that helps people remember the top priorities when a crisis occurs: Protect yourself, protect others, protect your building, and contact Public Safety. When people seek to know what to do in a crisis, they can remember these priorities. This can get them on the right path to crisis response, as the first thirty seconds are critical.
This concept will be featured in Staying alive: How to act fast and survive deadly encounters, a book being published by Barron's Educational Series, being released in Spring of 2014. The book is co-authored by Michael Dorn, Stephen Satterly, Sonayia Shepherd and Chris Dorn.

School security controversy in Bridgeport
Bridgeport, CT
In a dispute over who sets policy, a member of the Board of Education refused to give up her driver's license at the high school her daughter attends.
After Sandy Hook, the Bridgeport Police conducted a security assessment, and developed the policy in which visitors surrender their driver's license or ID, and do not get it back until they leave.
The Board member's stance was that it is not policy until the Board of Education votes on, and approves it.

Trauma in Sandy Hook Elementary
I learned of this tragedy as my school bus fleet prepared for our annual Christmas luncheon. We held a moment of silence, and then we shared our company with each other, with a renewed sense of life and an awareness of how it could end quickly. It reaffirmed for us why we do what we do, to get our precious cargo to and from school safely.
There are numerous pitfalls that can come after a tragedy like this. The first is to be reactionary. The smoke has barely cleared, literally, and I've already see some of this;
'Put all schools into lockdown!'
'Ban all guns!'
I heard it described succinctly by Dr. Greg Sipes, a psychologist, on local radio. He described left-brained and right-brained thinking. Left-brained thinking governs logical, rational thinking, while the right-brain governs emotional thinking. The reactionary examples come from the right brain. It is a natural response to trauma such as this, and should not be scorned or dismissed out-of-hand. However, we need to keep it in perspective, and keep the left-brain engaged as well.
This is hard to do with the pictures we are seeing of horrified children and parents that are coming out of Newtown, CT.
The second pitfall, exacerbated by the first, is to react based upon early information. This information will often change as it is vetted, corrected, then disseminated. We should then study the information, and get to understand the ramifications before we make changes.
Sandy Hook Elementary School has suffered a horrible tragedy at the hands of a gunman for as yet undisclosed reasons. 20 children are dead, as are 6 staff members.
Pray for the victims, and let the information develop.

School Bus Video Shows Agent Firing Gun at Suspect, Bus Driver Calming Students
Trumbull, CT
Two weeks after a police shooting on Old Town Road that was witnessed by dozens of students on a Frenchtown School bus, school Transportation Director Dawn Perkins is still awed by the calm demeanor and quick actions of bus driver Ralph Cerulo.
"He was thinking about the kids the entire time," Perkins said.
Perkins recently allowed the Trumbull Times to view video footage from two Trumbull school buses that were at the scene when federal agents attempted to capture Jeffrey Thomas, 21, who had earlier fled police looking into gang-related activity in the area.
Video from Cerulo's bus shows him approaching the front gate of the Eaves Trumbull complex, formerly known as Avalon Gates, and pulling over to allow a student to board. As the bus is stopped, about a dozen cars speed past, the last two swerving over the yellow lines to pass the bus as Cerulo pulls away.
Cerulo then arrives at Eaves, and students begin piling onto the bus. The camera then shows two vehicles stop alongside the bus, just a few feet away, and an agent exit the closest car. At that point, and with several students still outside the bus, the first shot rings out and the agent on camera visibly flinches.
"You can't tell who fired that first shot, but if the suspect fired at the agent, and it looks like that's what happened, then the bus was definitely in the line of fire," Perkins said.
The students don't show much reaction to the first shot, perhaps not understanding what it was. The agent then runs the length of the bus, and the camera shows him firing three times at a fleeing car.
After a few seconds, a student says "Oh, my God" and another shouts "A robber!" A moment later, another student whispers "Get down."
At that point, with the last students aboard and the bus's door closed, Cerulo says in a calm but urgent voice, "Everybody sit down." A few seconds later, as several children begin to scream and cry, he repeats the request, saying "Everybody sit down, please."
Perkins said his calm decisiveness was impressive.
