A school district faces two fake bomb threats, and reviews its safety procedures. More often than not, a bomb threat is used to interrupt classes. The trouble is, a bomb threat cannot be taken lightly. After all, who wants to be the leader of a school district that ignored a bomb threat, and had students killed as a result?
How do schools evaluate bomb threats?
This calls for a close relationship with a district's local law enforcement. Law enforcement can review the facts in the case and help a district determine if the threat is credible or not. However, school leaders need to make sure they follow their own safety protocols, regardless of whether the LEOs deem a bomb threat 'credible' or not.

Rumors of School Violence on Dec. 21 Traced Back to Oswego High School Threat

Rumors of threats were swirling around two high schools and several junior highs, but authorities have localized the threat to Oswego High School.
Authorities do not believe the threat is credible, but are still investigating it thoroughly.

Englewood School Bus Shooting After CPS Basketball Game Leaves Teen Injured

A student was shot in the leg while riding a school bus after three or four men took aim at the school bus. A couple of windows were shot out, and a bullet hole in the side marked the round that struck the student.
The shooting occurred after a basketball game. The school bus driver took the student to Provident Hospital, where the student was listed in good condition.

Man Killed in Rear-End Crash With School Bus
Kankakee County, IL
A school bus was stopped in Kankakee County to pick up a Herscher High School student when a car rear-ended the bus, killing the driver.
There were five children on the bus. Four were taken to the hospital, none with life-threatening injuries.
The wreck happened on a stretch of highway known for speeders.

Students at Parkside Community Academy were being dismissed for the day when shots rang out. The shooting sent the students, and parents, into a panic. Fortunately, no students, parents or teachers were injured.

Lawsuit: Sex Assaults Part of Maine West Soccer Team Hazing Ritual

Charges were filed against the Maine Twp. School District, alleging that sexual battery occurred during hazing on the boy's soccer team.
Police say six students have been charged, and the school says up to ten students were disciplined.

A Quincy School Bus Involved in Crash
Quincy, IL
A Quincy Public School District bus was involved in a crash shortly before 3 p.m. Friday.
The crash occurred near the intersection of 10th and Jersey streets.
Students were on the bus, but no injuries have been reported, according to a Quincy Police officer at the scene.
There is little information known about the crash at this time. Police and QPS transportation director Shane Barnes are presently at the crash scene.

Barrington Middle School Students Suspended over Sex Abuse on Bus

Two students at a northwest suburban middle school have been suspended after the district investigated a series of alleged sexual abuse incidents that took place earlier this month on a school bus, Pioneer Press is reporting.
Tom Leonard, superintendant of Barrington School District 220, sent a letter to parents Tuesday notifying the community of the reported assaults, which officials said occurred over a four-day period from Oct. 1 to Oct. 4.
“The bus driver noticed some questionable activity going on in the back of the bus,” said Jeff Arnett, chief communications officer for District 220. “Almost at the same time, a student submitted a bullying report on behalf of the student on the bus.”
The report, Arnett said, prompted Prairie Middle School officials to examine surveillance videos taken on the bus.

Two Teens Shot while Playing Basketball near School

Two teenagers were shot while they played basketball Tuesday night near a public elementary school in the Rogers Park neighborhood, police said.
The teens — ages 17 and 18 — were shooting hoops in the 7600 block of North Marshfield, where the Stephen F. Gale Math and Science Academy is located, police said.
A light colored sport-utility vehicle drove by about 10 p.m. and shots were fired, police said.
The 17-year-old boy was shot in the left arm and the 18-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the buttocks, officials said.
Both teens were taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where they were listed in good condition, police said.

A 14-year-old student was tackled and detained by his teacher just after the teen fired a gunshot into the ceiling of a packed Illinois high school classroom on Friday, police and witnesses said.
The boy was taken into custody and questioned by police while Normal Community High School's more than 1,800 students were evacuated to a nearby church where parents could pick them up, Normal Police Chief Rick Bleichner said.
No one was injured.

A Smiths Falls man faces child pornography charges after an undercover online investigation.
The Ontario Provincial Police child sexual exploitation unit and the Smiths Falls police began their joint investigation in the middle of May after an undercover officer identified a suspect online they believed was in possession of child pornography.
Five computers containing child pornography were seized by police.
Daniel Gerald Fortin, 49, is charged with three counts of possession of child pornography and two counts of making child pornography available.

Discovery Middle School's band director was arrested today for failing to report an alleged relationship between his son, a band volunteer, and a 15-year-old girl. The son was arrested for possession of child pornography, Madison police said.
Discovery band director John Vardon Nash, 58, was arrested for failing to report the alleged relationship as required by state law, police said. (See press release below) He was taken to Madison County Jail on a $500 bond. Nash's son, John Bradley Nash, 24, was arrested for child pornography on July 3 and placed in Madison County Jail on a $2,500 bond.
Police said they were notified on June 28 of a possibly inappropriate relationship between Bradley Nash, identified as a "male band volunteer," and the 15-year-old female student. Police said the school's administration worked with police and the girl's parents to investigate. "It was discovered the relationship had previously been reported to the band director who failed to report the relationship to authorities as mandated by state law," police said. "A search warrant on Bradley Nash's computer revealed obscene images of minors."

As WBBM Newsradio’s Pat Cassidy reports, Francisco Mejia, 26, was arrested at O’Hare International Airport last week upon arriving from San Salvador. He had been wanted on a 2010 federal grand jury indictment on charges of possession and distribution of child pornography.

Teachers Attacked by Students Show Signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Six years ago, Norma Brown, a Chicago Public Schools teacher for more than 30 years, took a stand against a fourth-grader who refused to remove his baseball hat in the school's lunchroom.
A fight ensued. A group of 11- and 12-year-olds surrounded Brown, yelling and cursing. One cocked his fist and punched her squarely in the left eye. Brown stumbled for the door and two girls, a sixth-grader and an eighth-grader, began punching and kicking her. She fought to remain standing.
"I knew that if I fell to the ground they would stomp on me," she said recently. "When you fall, you're dead meat."
What happened to Brown may be extreme, but police records show reports of violent attacks against teachers and school staff have risen sharply in Illinois over the past decade. As doctors and psychologists work to return these assault victims to the classrooms, there is growing acceptance that they may suffer more than physical injuries.

Police are investigating a report of an attempt by a middle-aged man to abduct an 11-year-old girl.
Sugar Grove police said officers were called Tuesday night to the area of McCannon Street and Bastian Drive, about two blocks west of Kaneland John Shields Elementary School, for a report of a possible abduction attempt.
Police said a girl, 11, told them she was sitting on a bench at the west end of Volunteer Park around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday when a white, older Chevrolet Astro van stopped on the street in front of her.

A man tried to grab an East Chicago teen as she walked home from school Monday, Police Chief Mark Becker said Friday.

“Fortunately, she was able to break free and run home to safety,” Becker said.
The 13-year-old girl was in the 4300 block of
Northcote about 3:30 p.m. when a light-skinned Hispanic male driving a
tan Chevrolet Impala got out of his car and walked up to the girl,
Becker said.
“The man asked her for her name and then told her
to come over to him. The girl refused, at which time the man grabbed her
arm and attempted to pull her in his direction,” Becker said.

No Additional Safety Threats Found At Craig High School, 1 Student in Custody

At approximately 10:55 a.m. Craig High School was placed in a soft lockdown due to a threat that was found this morning in the school.
A follow-up investigation by administration and district resource officers identified the author of this threat and the student is in custody. The building is safe, the lockdown was canceled at 11:05 a.m., and the normal class schedule was resumed.

Student Struck by Car on Way to School
Oak Forest, IL
A 26-year-old Oak Forest woman was cited
for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk in connection with
the accident, in which neither speed nor alcohol was a factor, Oak
Forest Police Chief Greg Anderson said.
The student, who has not been
identified, is making “baby steps” toward progress and was in critical
but stable condition at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, school
officials said.
He is a popular, well-liked student who
was to be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society on Monday
night, Forest Ridge School District 142 Supt. Margaret Longo said. An
induction ceremony will be held in the hospital when the student is up
to it, she said.
