More details in Danvers, MA murder case

Danvers, MA

A classmate of the 14-year old student who murdered Colleen Ritzer last week said that the teacher had asked the boy to stay behind after class.  The boy had been doodling in his notebook instead of taking notes.  The classmate said the boy did not appear to be agitated.

After following the teacher into a restroom and beating her, the assailant slashed her throat, dumped her body into a recycling bin, and then dumped her body in the woods behind the school.  He then went to go watch a Woody Allen movie.

No motive has been established.

'Pharm Parties' Leading Some Western Massachusetts Teens to Misuse of Prescription Drugs

Ludlow, MA
Michael J. Dias was born on Oct. 18, 1989, but instead of celebrating his birthday, his family in Ludlow now mourns his death.

Dias committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in May 2009.

The fall into the lure of drugs for tens of thousands of young people across Western Massachusetts begins as early as middle school and most likely by high school when they begin using and abusing pharmaceutical drugs – oxycodone, hydrocodone, Percocet, and Ritalin, police and medical experts say.

“The statistics are pretty scary. The number of middle schoolers who have tried oxycodone or hydrocodone-type prescription medications is fairly alarming, but in high school it’s become an epidemic,” said Dr. Louis Durkin, emergency room medical director at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield.

Pharmaceutical drugs are highly addictive, hooking students not only on the medication but also the dealer. In high school, when the supplier graduates, students left behind are forced to find another source. Very often this pursuit of drugs takes a dangerous turn into the city. The young drug users are now forced to buy from drug dealers in metropolitan areas, like Springfield and Holyoke, where law enforcement officers say the suburban kids can wind up being in over their heads.

Forsyth Student’s Restraining Order against Another Student Raises Legal Questions

Forsyth County, MA
A Forsyth County mother is criticizing local school officials over their handling of a restraining order she filed for her daughter, who alleged that a male student groped her and threatened to rape her at a local high school.

School officials declined to comment on the specific incident, which happened in September, citing federal student privacy laws, but say they do everything they can to comply with a restraining order, even though they are not legally responsible for enforcing it. But a legal expert says schools are entering new territory in trying to deal with students who file restraining orders against each other.

The mother told the Winston-Salem Journal in late October that she has since pulled her daughter out of the high school because of safety concerns.

Mass. High School Cancels Night Games due to EEE Threat

Hansen, MA
With the EEE threat level in the area going from moderate to high, Whitman-Hanson has decided to cancel all night games.

That has left some athletes upset, but parents and coaches say better safe than sorry.

This is just a scrimmage between Whitman-Hanson and Plymouth North girls varsity soccer teams, but when the season starts next week several soccer and football games will be moved up or rescheduled to keep players and their fans safe.

"I think anytime it comes to safety right you can only make one decision which is to err on the side of caution," said Assistant Principal and girls soccer coach David Floeck.

Floeck says the school district has a policy in place that any time the risk level rises above moderate for contracting mosquito-borne illnesses like Eastern Equine Encephalitis or West Nile Virus, they curtail nighttime activities on the advice of the health department.

Massachusetts Town Rallies Behind Coach Accused of Serving Alcohol to Players

Plymouth, MA
An entire Massachusetts community is rallying behind a beloved high school coach, whose reputation they say was unfairly "dragged through the mud" when he was accused by an anonymous parent of serving alcohol to players.

Dwayne Follette, a longtime baseball and football coach at North Plymouth High School in Plymouth, Mass., was under investigation by police after school officials received an anonymous letter in June claiming the coach served alcohol to players at an end-of-year party.

But police on Thursday reportedly suspended their probe due to lack of evidence, and supporters of the coach claim the allegation was made up by a disgruntled parent upset over their child's lack of playing time on Follette's team.

Update: No Missing Kids, Despite Big Response to Reported Abduction

Boston, MA
Boston Police spent several hours yesterday scouring the Dudley Triangle after a report of a possible child abduction set off a huge response in the vicinity of the John Winthrop School on Brookford St.
Police say today that the report appears to have been false- and that no children have been reported missing overnight in the city of Boston.

The action started around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday when police were summoned to the Winthrop School. Three children who had been dismissed from the school returned to tell the principal that they witnessed an older while male stuffing a duffle bag into the trunk of a car on Hartford Street, about a block from the school. The witnesses— described by police as "very young"— claimed that they heard a girl screaming from the duffle bag. The suspect was described as driving away in a black sedan.

"All students at the school were accounted for, there was no indication of foul play and no missing children in the city," said Officer Grant. "We're handling it as an open investigation, but we're not sure the witnesses actually saw what they said they saw."

4 Chicopee Sheepdogs You Should Know

Chicopee, MA
Blocked by a truck that trapped them in the middle of a shoot-out, Cecilia Rosado put her bus in park, turned off the engine, laid on the floor and made phone calls.

“I thought it was going to be my last day. I was very scared,” she said.

She called the school bus company to warn them not to send any other buses to Chicopee Center. At the same time Tina McCollaum, the bus monitor, laid next to the 8-year-old boy on the bus to keep him calm and phoned the School Department so they could notify his parents.

Those two, crossing guard Deborah Paquette and Joseph Morrissette, a school resource officer from Comprehensive High School, were honored by the School Committee and administrators for their courageous and professional handling of the situation that kept many children safe.

Thank you all, Sheepdogs!

Toddler Found Locked Inside Dark Classroom at Preschool after Hours

Westport, MA
Police are investigating a Massachusetts preschool after a 3-year-old girl was allegedly left alone in a locked, dark classroom after school hours, MyFoxBoston reports.

Keith Paquette says he arrived at the Westport Country Day School to pick up his daughter Samantha Jo at about 5:15 p.m. on Monday, but found the school closed. He told MyFoxBoston all the doors at the school were locked, the lights were off and there was no sign of his daughter.

Paquette says he frantically searched the playground and the woods before a teacher from the school came back to help him find Samantha Jo. The teacher then heard noises from inside a classroom.
